Headquartered in Washington D.C., Mighty Earth has built strong partnerships globally, and currently has staff based across the U.S., South America, Europe and the United Kingdom. The organization manages a significant amount of restricted foundation and government funding, with a budget of approximately $7 million and expectations of continued growth.
Position Overview
The Accounting Manager is a full-time position reporting to our Senior Director of Finance & Accounting. The Accounting Manager is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of the general ledger, establishing month-end close processes and generating timely and accurate financial statements on a monthly basis, maintaining records and internal controls, and managing the day-to-day accounting functions of Mighty Earth. The Accounting Manager will also serve as the administrator for Mighty Earth's financial systems.
Your responsibilities:
Responsible for managing day-to-day accounting functions, ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards, particularly revenue recognition and regulatory requirements
Ensure the accuracy and completeness of the financial records and the timely processing and recording of all financial transactions, including local and international payroll, accounts payable, pledges, cash receipts, and necessary accruals and adjusting journal entries
Lead a consistent and timely monthly closing process, including bank reconciliations
Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local requirements
Ensure proper allocation of shared costs and review and improve methodology on a regular basis
In partnership with the Senior Director of Finance & Accounting, formulate, recommend and implement sound fiscal policies, procedures and controls; monitor internal controls and make recommendations for policy changes and process improvements
Train and support staff in fiscal policies and procedures
Maintain the chart of accounts and institute an orderly electronic accounting and compliance document retention system
Track schedule of program and time-restricted net assets
Support annual budgeting and planning
Contribute to the development of timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including balance sheets, cash flow, budget vs. actual for program and organization, and income statements
Serve as the primary point of contact with the external auditor for the financial audit, the Form 990 preparation, and any funder requested audits
Support integration and adoption of Acumatica - Mighty Earth’s new Procurement and Finance & Accounting system
Serve as the system administrator for QuickBooks, Acumatica, Bill, Expensify and Harvest, ensuring accounting structure consistency across the systems and user access management
Complete bank deposits as needed
Support trainings for staff in nonprofit financial management
Support collaboration between Finance and Development
What we’re looking for in you:
You have a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance or equivalent training
You have at least four years of finance and accounting experience in a nonprofit setting
You have non-profit finance and accounting knowledge and experience as demonstrated by a thorough understanding of organizational audited financial statements, budgets, monthly reports, and projections, as well as underlying general ledger transactions, chart of accounts, direct program expenses and allocations, indirect cost structure and allocations, and grant and contract budgets
You have a record of producing accurate financial information in a timely manner
You have experience with fund accounting and cloud-based billing and expense management systems
You have demonstrated experience in applying nonprofit revenue recognition standards across complex grant portfolios
You have an independent yet collaborative work style
You have strong problem solving, analytical, and reasoning skills
You have an interest in protecting the environment and advancing a more just society.
You have experience with and a commitment to working with people from a variety of backgrounds, including different ethnic, racial, and socio-economic backgrounds, and the LGBTQ+ community.
Preferred qualifications
Experience working in an advocacy or campaigning setting
Experience working with colleagues based across the globe
Location: This is a full-time position with a preference for candidates based in the Washington, D.C. area. We are open to remote candidates based in other U.S. locations, with a preference for Eastern time zone locations. For candidates based in the D.C. area, the expectation is to work in the office two days per week.
Compensation and benefits: The salary range for this position is $80K – $90K, depending on experience. We have a generous benefits package including group health insurance, dental benefits, unlimited vacation time, paid holidays, and a 401(k) plan.
