JOB DESCRIPTION

The Batchu for Council team is looking for volunteer interns who are passionate about organizing and building community power to support Sarah Batchu’s campaign for City Council in District 2. High school students, undergraduate and graduate students, recent graduates, and individuals without college experience are encouraged to apply to serve as interns from now through June 2025.

Volunteer Internship Overview: Interns will gain hands-on experience on a city council campaign and are encouraged to apply for their area of interest. Comprehensive training will be provided. Interns are expected to** dedicate at least 10 hours per week**. Non-field tasks can be completed remotely. 

About Sarah

Sarah Batchu is running for New York City Council in District 2, representing the East Village, Gramercy, Kips Bay, Murray Hill and the Lower East Side. A dedicated advocate for equity, Sarah’s career spans public service and nonprofit leadership, tackling systemic inequalities in housing, health, and community well-being. As Vice Chair of Manhattan Community Board 3 and a healthcare activist, she’s led efforts to reform public housing, expand access to healthcare, and address health inequities through innovative programs like the Center for Wellbeing & Happiness. Sarah’s leadership is rooted in a commitment to building a fairer, healthier city that cares for all its residents.

Key Internship Roles:

Community Outreach & Field Team (Remote and In-Person):

  • Make phone calls, send texts, and emails to voters to discuss campaign goals and gather community feedback.

  • Distribute campaign literature at key locations, including businesses and residential areas.

  • Distribute campaign posters throughout District 2

  • Assist with petitioning efforts starting in February 2025.

  • Join Sarah Batchu at campaign events to engage with voters, business owners, and community leaders.

  • Recruit and train community members to support voter outreach efforts.

Digital & Communications Team (Remote):

  • Advise on and create content for social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), campaign emails, and the website.

  • Monitor and respond to social media activity, highlighting noteworthy posts.

  • Draft press releases, statements, op-eds, and other materials to support campaign messaging.

  • Proofread all written communications for accuracy and clarity.

  • Pitch media opportunities, including podcasts and interviews, to amplify Sarah’s platform.

Policy & Research Team (Remote):

  • Draft policy briefs on critical issues like housing, transportation, and economic development.

  • Collaborate with the Digital Team to create engaging Instagram stories and visual content highlighting campaign policies.

  • Research and analyze demographic data within the district to inform campaign strategies.

  • Prepare briefs on community concerns and priorities, such as tenant associations and labor unions, to shape campaign responses.
