Overview
Better Ballot Georgia, a volunteer-driven statewide 501c3 organization that educates the public about ranked choice voting (RCV), is looking for a fractional executive director to work on the front lines of a transformative campaign to support upgrading Georgia’s voting system to ranked choice voting (RCV). Hiring and supervision will be managed by Rank the Vote, which is a national grassroots organization founded by RCV activists.
This Executive Director will work with the Board to lead the organization in building broad positive recognition of and support for RCV in Georgia. They will build relationships with key stakeholders, influence positive media representation of RCV, develop and implement plans to drive volunteer engagement, and oversee smart and compelling campaigns across digital and in-person mediums to endorsements of and support for RCV in Georgia. The Executive Director will also be responsible for making strategy suggestions to the Board, and implementing the Board’s decisions.
Core Responsibilities
Executive / Administrative:
Work with the Board on strategy, finance/budget, and other factors needed to implement the strategy advancing public support of RCV.
Develop movement-building plans with leadership including quantitative benchmarks, goals, deliverables, etc. Develop clear quantitative and qualitative metrics and operational mechanisms for field-based activity.
Directly supervise the Statewide Organizer, holding weekly check-ins to remove blockers and ensure goals are met.
Participate in the selection and management of consultants and vendors, if needed.
Other fundraising, operational, strategic planning, training, and administrative duties as needed.
Training and enablement of star volunteers in execution of executive, fundraising, communications, and coalition functions.
Fundraising:
Oversee grant applications and reporting.
Cultivate relationships with larger 4-5 figure donors.
Recruit hosts for house parties and coordinate invitations and agendas.
Collaborate with the Board to ensure financial sustainability.
Support Fundraising Team providing oversight and strategic direction establishing clear project frameworks.
Endorsements/Strategic Partnerships:
Cultivate and maintain relationships with community leaders, influencers, elected officials, and allied organizations for partnerships, collaboration, and social media amplification.
Manage media relations such as interviews, podcast appearances, article publication, and press releases.
Speak publicly about RCV to groups, on podcasts, and with media outlets. Work with Executive Team to decide when speaking engagements may be given to appropriate and trained volunteers.
Update a reporting system for tracking stances of key operatives.
Develop and maintain relations with national/state/regional volunteer groups in the electoral reform space.
As needed:
Volunteer Management:
Work with the Statewide Organizer to ensure the organization has adequate volunteers, engagement, and volunteer structure to support organizational goals.
Work with Statewide Organizer and volunteer Team Leads to implement the organization’s strategic goals and help volunteers know they are making a meaningful contribution.
Communicate status updates and action items to local RCV supporters. Work with the Statewide Organizer and Team Leads to ensure volunteer communications and events are appropriately structured, impactful, and promoted well.
Refine strategy and goals into executable projects for volunteer teams to carry out
Develop and deliver compelling public relations presence via the campaign’s messaging strategy. Help define, refine, develop, and deliver on the campaign’s messaging strategy for broad, diverse appeal adapting to current events. Drive communications across email, text, social media, and traditional media to educate the electorate about RCV.
Qualifications
Essential Experience: 3+ years experience in a leadership role in non-profit space (Board Member, Development Director, or ED). Proven track record securing funding. Experience translating a board's vision into actionable goals. Experience with metrics-based capacity growth and goal-setting and moving volunteers from online to offline direct actions. Personnel / volunteer management experience. Excellent public speaking and meeting facilitation skills.
Preferred Experience:
Existing relationships with Georgia political stakeholders or media.
Proven experience inspiring supporters and volunteers.
Experience managing remote staff or contractors.
Experience with organization communications and public relations boosting organization notoriety across interest groups and communities
Volunteer training and management experience for 5+ years.
Lobbying / advocacy experience for issue(s).
Engaging presenter and speaker.
Tech skills: Competence in project management and collaboration suites (Google Suite, Slack, Asana). Comfortable reviewing reports from CRM/Donor Management systems (such as NationBuilder, CallHub, NGP VAN/VoteBuilder, or similar). Competence with spreadsheets.
Characteristics: Understanding of the Georgia political landscape. Passion for RCV and a commitment to continued learning, drive, vision, obsessive attention to detail, proven leadership, an unwavering positive attitude and good humor, an eagerness to receive feedback and course-correct. Adherence to an ethos of non-partisan public relations and messaging, including engagement with individuals from a broad spectrum of political views, and ability to show restraint on expressing personal partisan opinions. Exceptional people skills and emotional intelligence.
Timing: Some evenings and weekends as necessary to ensure maximum engagement with volunteers and leaders. Currently a fractional (part time) position, with future potential for full-time should further funding be obtained.
Travel: Work is hybrid and mostly remote, with some in-person time needed, depending on tasks required. Most in-person work will be around metro Atlanta. Some travel may be required for meetings or presentations to facilitate organizational goals. Any travel that requires you to be away from home overnight, or significantly outside of your metropolitan area, will be reimbursed according to the current IRS mileage, lodging and per diem rates and rules.
Residency: Resident of Georgia.
Language: Spanish speaking proficiency is a plus.
Schedule:
Fractional (part time), with future potential for full-time when funding is obtained. (Some evenings and weekends required)
Compensation and Contract terms:
We’re committed to bringing in top talent from all sectors. Accordingly, we offer competitive salaries. The Fractional Executive Director position comes at $40-50/hr depending on experience and amount of weekly hours agreed. BBGA is looking for 10-15 hours per week.
Part-time employees accrue sick leave in accordance with state law.
