Position Overview

The Data Manager plays a key role in Blueprint NC's mission to build independent power for an anti-racist, inclusive democracy. This position connects our data-driven strategies with our partners' grassroots organizing efforts. The Data Manager will use voter and demographic data to support our 102 partner organizations in their field organizing and voter engagement programs. Key responsibilities include managing our voter file and digital organizing tools, providing data-informed strategic recommendations, and ensuring the effective use of data best practices across all levels of our work. Working closely with the Director of Mobilization and Election Protection, the Field Coordinator, and other Blueprint NC staff, the Data Manager will help support our partners and turn data into useful insights that drive our collective impact. This role requires a combination of technical skills and a deep commitment to serving Blueprint NC partners.

 

The Data Manager reports to the Director of Mobilization and Election Protection.

 

Principal Responsibilities for the Data Manager include:

Data Strategy and Table Support 

  • Use data, VAN, and other technologies to support partner organizations in developing their field organizing and voter contact plans.

  • Make strategic recommendations on effective data use, including standards for data collection, acquisition, and preservation.

  • Provide relevant materials that support collective strategy and partner programs, including the creation of target universes and list match reports.

  • Offer technical assistance with VAN and other field tools, including handling partner data requests, uploading data, and supporting use of tools such as MiniVAN and Thrutalk.

 

Civic Engagement Tools Management

  • Train partners on and administer digital organizing tools including Thrutalk, Dispatch (Spoke), Empower, and Openfield.

  • Manage committees, users, and security settings for Blueprint NC partners in VAN and other civic engagement tools.

  • Make recommendations for additional field tools to support table strategy and partner field work.

  • Monitor use of the systems to ensure compliance with state and national policies, including the MOU process.

 

Staff and Partner Training

  • Develop, lead, and implement data trainings for Blueprint NC and partner staff, including basic VAN and tools trainings.

  • Provide ongoing support to organizing and data staff at Blueprint NC partners.

  • Provide training on data hygiene and best practices for data collection.

 

Voter Contact Management

  • Support the creation of universes for voter contact, considering strategic goals for upcoming electoral cycles and long-term efforts to build voting base and partners' membership.

  • Manage various voter contact methods, including cutting turf for canvasses, setting up phone banks, and coordinating with Blueprint NC partners.

  • Track voter contact and produce daily, weekly, and monthly reports as needed.

 

Data Management and Analysis

  • Maintain documentation of all voter contact, turnout, and election protection data.

  • Ensure data quality by routinely cleaning data, creating/documenting data management procedures, and ensuring staff and partners follow best practices.

  • Collaborate with staff on analyses for electoral work and future voter engagement and registration opportunities.

  • Analyze ongoing data generated through voter registration, issue campaigns, base-building, digital organizing, and voter contact efforts for both internal and external audiences.

 

Coordinating with National and State-based data staff 

  • Function as part of a national data peer network, which includes regular calls and trainings with State Voices national data team to help maintain a shared data infrastructure across the states.

  • Participate in national working groups to develop nation-wide standards and best practices.

 

Experience & Skills: 

Required

  • Professional Experience:

  • At least 2-3 years serving in a data role, or at least 3-4 years of organizing experience with one year in a data role.

  • Experience working in Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian American, and other People of Color communities preferably in a campaign or organizing settings.

  • Experience working in coalition with partners.

  • Background in 501c3 work or demonstrated commitment to progressive organizations.

  • Technical Skills:

  • Experience using VAN (Voter Activation Network)/VoteBuilder or other civic engagement platforms.

  • Familiarity with various digital organizing tools, including:

  • Calling tools (e.g., Thrutalk, Scale to Win)

  • Texting tools (e.g., Thrutext, Hustle, Spoke, Dispatch)

  • Relational organizing tools (e.g., Reach, Empower)

  • Canvassing tools (e.g., MiniVAN, Openfield)

  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and/or Google Sheets.

  • Willingness and aptitude to learn new technical skills as needed.

  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ability to explain complex data concepts to non-technical audiences.

  • Experience in mentoring or training others.

Preferred:

  • Experience with data management, database administration, and reporting tools (e.g., Tableau, Looker Studio).

  • Knowledge of SQL or similar coding languages.

 

Salary and Benefits

Compensation is $66,000-$74,000 and benefits include retirement and medical, dental and vision insurance, internet stipend, wellness and home office stipends, and a generous PTO policy.

 

Location

This position is remote from anywhere in North Carolina. We are open to considering out of state candidates that could immediately start, but the expectation would be to relocate to North Carolina by January 2025.
