JOB DESCRIPTION

Abdul for Senate is seeking talented candidates to work as a Coalitions Director for the 2026 election cycle. We are looking for passionate, hardworking individuals who are committed to our mission of electing Abdul El-Sayed our next U.S. Senator.

Role Overview:

The Coalitions Director is responsible for leading the campaign's statewide coalitions program, overseeing a team of Outreach Directors dedicated to the Arab American, Black, Latino, Jewish, and Muslim communities, and managing relationships with more than 25 additional community-based, volunteer-led groups. This role requires a strategic mind for coalition building, strong people-management skills, and the ability to unify a diverse set of community engagement efforts into one coherent, disciplined program. The Coalitions Director should be skilled at navigating complex and sometimes competing community interests, building trust across many different constituencies, and translating relationships into organized, measurable voter engagement. This is a full-time position based in Detroit or Ann Arbor, MI, although there is flexibility with remote work and travel is required statewide. This position offers compensation in the form of a monthly salary and healthcare benefits.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and support the Outreach Directors for the Arab American, Black, Latino, Jewish, and Muslim community programs, including setting goals, reviewing strategy, and ensuring accountability

  • Oversee a coalitions program encompassing 25+ community and affinity-based volunteer-led groups

  • Execute an overarching coalitions strategy that aligns with the campaign's broader voter contact and persuasion goals

  • Serve as a senior point of contact for coalition partners, community leaders, and endorsing organizations

  • Coordinate with the field and digital organizing teams to ensure coalitions work is integrated into the campaign's overall organizing program

  • Plan and oversee coalition-related events, endorsement rollouts, and public engagements

  • Track engagement metrics across all coalition groups and report progress to campaign leadership

  • Mediate and resolve conflicts or competing priorities among coalition partners and staff

  • Other campaign needs as required

Qualifications (Required):

  • A minimum of 4 political cycles of paid work experience in campaigns, coalition building, or community organizing required

  • Excellent management skills, including experience managing staff who work directly with distinct community constituencies

  • Established relationships across multiple community, cultural, or advocacy networks in Michigan

  • Demonstrated ability to build trust and navigate sensitive or complex dynamics across diverse communities

  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to oversee multiple programs and staff simultaneously

  • Willingness to work irregular hours including some nights and weekends

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate credibly and respectfully across a wide range of communities

  • Must have transportation to attend events statewide as needed

  • Proficiency with Excel and Google Drive

  • Ability to balance competing priorities in a fast-paced, demanding environment while maintaining exceptional organization and attention to detail

  • Commitment to electing Abdul El-Sayed to the U.S. Senate

  • Ability to demonstrate multicultural competence – the awareness, knowledge and skills needed to work with others who are culturally different from self in meaningful, relevant and productive ways

  • Personal and professional commitment to promoting and investing in cross-cultural skills and awareness related to individuals from broad backgrounds, races, ethnicities, religions, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and disability

Qualifications (Preferred):

  • Experience using VAN and MyCampaigns, Solidarity, or other volunteer management software

  • Existing relationships or contacts with local community leaders and organizations outside of traditional progressive Democratic circles
