We are seeking a part-time Communications Strategist to support J. Miakoda Taylor in content creation, marketing, and related communications. This multi-faceted role is ideal for someone comfortable and experienced working collaboratively with a visionary leader. You are an ideal candidate if you are: a strong writer and editor; detail-oriented, organized, and creative; and have experience developing inspiring content and implementing communication strategies that achieve marketing goals. Ideal candidates will also be interested in participating in our unique culture and approach to collaboration.
J. Miakoda Taylor (they/them/we/us) is a disabled, two-spirit descendant of Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island, enslaved Africans, and European immigrants, embodying over 25 years of experience in community organizing, leadership and organizational development, and building trust and accountability across seemingly insurmountable divides. We have worked with hundreds of teams, coalitions, and organizations with a primary focus on Black, Indigenous, disabled, and other QTPOC leaders across a wide range of sectors (food justice, Indigenous lifeways, immigrant rights, education, criminal justice, public health, child and family services, and eco-stewardship).
All of our work is catalyzed by the belief that building resilient relationships is the most important investment of resources for individuals and groups advancing ambitious change agendas. It is informed by the philosophies and praxises of Transformative Justice, emotional-social-somatic- ancestral trauma healing, and experiential & Popular Education. Through interim leadership, coaching, consulting, and training, Miakoda supports coalitions, teams, and individuals to: be responsive, adaptive, and relationally accountable under pressure; work in greater alignment with their values; engage in radical forms of collaboration; and lead liberated lives.
Miakoda is a sole proprietor who works with varying numbers (usually between 2-10) of independent contractors to support the administration and service delivery of their work. They are fiscally sponsored by, and work in close partnership with Restoring Lifeways.
Miakoda’s current team consists of the following:
Lead Steward (J. Miakoda Taylor)
Fiscal Sponsor (Dane Zahorsky)
Marketing & Communications Consultant (Resonance)
Communications Steward (Geneva Toland, Independent Contractor) — This is the role we are hiring for.
We have a deep commitment to embodying our talk. As such, our team utilizes the same suite of tools, practices, and structures that we teach.
This suite of tools position teams to:
Deeply actualize values of equity, justice, distributed leadership, mutual accountability, and radical collaboration
Transform tensions into trust, pursue win-win solutions, and embody “I don’t know” as a place of power.
Leverage the trust created into healthier changes in our lives, work, and communities.
Within this culture, every team member is expected and supported to creatively engage the dynamic interplay between dignity and humility, as well as autonomy and collaboration, in service of us all feeling joyful, challenged, respected, and inspired by our daily interactions.
The ideal person for this role is interested in both learning about this unique work culture and engaging with us in the shared practices that keeps this culture alive.
If you are a confident, emotionally mature, level-headed, no-drama individual who likes to get things done, you are likely a fit for our team. You should be skilled at working both autonomously and in support of a visionary leader who has a strong sense of direction, serving in the combined role of strategic communications advisor, communications project steward, and content development collaborator. Clear and direct communication skills, asking questions to ensure clarity, being realistic about your capacity and experience, and generating dignity, humility, and humor in the face of challenging circumstances are all a must for this role.
