JOB DESCRIPTION

Dr. Kristin Lyerly’s campaign for Wisconsin’s Eighth Congressional District is seeking a Communications Director to lead all aspects of developing and increasing awareness of the Kristin for Wisconsin brand. 

 

They will develop messaging in careful coordination with party partners and spearhead rapid response communications and public relations to manage the campaign’s image. The Communications Director is a key collaborator for the Campaign Manager as the author or contract manager for the production of talking points, speeches, literature, and public facing documents and presentations. 

 

In addition to playing a critical role internally, the Communications Director maintains successful consultative relationships with other campaigns, candidates, allied groups. They manage relationships with the press and are the principal staff spokesperson for the party. The Communications Director reports to the Campaign Manager to support communications work throughout the campaign cycle.

 

About the Campaign:

Dr. Kristin Lyerly is the Democratic candidate for WI-08, the only open seat in Wisconsin. As a practicing OB/GYN, after the fall of Roe v. Wade, she fought against Wisconsin’s 1849 criminal abortion ban - and won. Now, after the surprise, early retirement of Congressman Mike Gallagher, she is running to fill the vacated seat, with a special election to fill out the remainder of the term. Wisconsin is one of the most crucial swing states in the country and, with new state-level maps and unprecedented engagement, high turnout rates are expected.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Generate earned media coverage of candidate's message through proactive planning and rapid response;

  • Write press releases, statements, media advisories, talking points, columns and remarks;

  • Serve as on-the-record spokesperson as necessary;

  • Build effective relationships with members of the media;

  • Design campaign graphics;

  • Field and respond to all media inquiries and oversee comprehensive media tracking program;

  • Manage all campaign social media accounts and oversee volunteer team;

  • Travel with the candidate to media events as needed; and

  • Work closely with the campaign team to align messaging and strategy.

 

Qualifications:

  • Positive attitude, calm under pressure;

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including on-the-record experience;

  • Track record of success in a fast-paced, high stakes environment;

  • Excellent social media skills, including Meta, Threads, Twitter/X, Tik Tok, with an emphasis on video creation;

  • Graphic design experience; 

  • Experience in a communications position for government office, political campaigns, organizations or a high profile non-profit preferred, but not required;

  • Wisconsin experience/ties preferred, but not required.
