This is an open position with Better Jobs for Alaska, the campaign working to pass a ballot initiative in 2024 in Alaska that would raise the minimum wage, require paid sick leave for workers, and increase worker freedom.
Position Summary
The Communications Director will devise the earned media and digital media strategy for Better Jobs for Alaska’s statewide ballot initiative campaign. They will be tasked with creating and executing a long-term communications and media plan for the campaign, including planning earned media hits, creating social media content, and drafting other written materials such as talking points and press releases. Creating and managing strong relationships with the Alaska press corps is a key component of this position.
We are looking for someone who is an energetic self-starter, organized, great at forecasting short-and long-term needs, with a long-term commitment to Alaska's future.
Duties & Areas of Activity:
Use public opinion research to draft campaign narrative and talking points
Build relationships with Alaska media across the state
Build media plan and calendar to maximize earned media opportunities
Write press releases
Create and manage digital media plan for campaign’s social media accounts
Work with campaign team to pitch stories of impacted workers and supportive business owners
Work with campaign team on paid media plan
Communicate effectively, give and receive feedback, adopt a learner's mindset to develop new skills.

Comfortable working long or irregular hours in a fast-paced environment under deadlines.
Additional, nice to have qualifications
Experience in digital communications and social media management
Preexisting relationships with Alaska-based reporters and news media
Experience working in communications work in an electoral, governmental, nonprofit, or similar capacity
Fluent in Google Workspace, particularly Sheets, Docs & Drive.

Title: Communications Director
Salary: $6,000-$7,000/month, dependent on experience
Location: Alaska (location flexible)
LOE: Contract employment w/Better Jobs for AK
Covered expenses: Travel expenses, as required & agreed to in writing
Reports to: Kevin Groh, Better Jobs for Alaska Campaign Manager
Benefits: $500/month health insurance stipend
