Summary:
The Kansas House Democratic Caucus is looking for a dedicated and committed Communications Director. As the Kansas House Democrats enter the 2025 Legislative Session, we’re looking for a talented individual who can drive an effective message, build a strong narrative for the Minority Leader, Leadership Team and caucus, and manage an aggressive communications and digital strategy.
The Communications Director will serve as an on-the-record spokesperson for the Minority Leader and caucus and will own the pen of the Kansas House Democrats. This position will report to the Chief of Staff, and work closely with all members of the caucus.
Key Responsibilities:
Drive a targeted and effective earned media strategy aimed at amplifying the Kansas House Democrats message and elevating the public image of the Minority Leader and members of the caucus.
Manage the Kansas House Democrats’ social media profile across all platforms, and execute a social media strategy focused on growing the caucus and Minority Leader’s followings.
Serve as on-the-record spokesperson for the Kansas House Democrats and Minority Leader, and prepare the Minority Leader and members of the caucus for print and broadcast interviews, press conferences, and public speaking engagements as needed.
Draft and edit external and internal facing earned media materials, including press releases, media advisories, op-eds, memos, and talking points.
Create weekly newsletter content for the members of the caucus, highlighting important issues, legislation, and successes.
Build strong working relationships with members of the Kansas Statehouse press corps, and manage all inbound press requests and pitching for both Kansas and national media.
Plan and execute press conferences for the Minority Leader and other members of the caucus.
Qualifications:
At least 1 year of experience in political communications, nonprofit communications, media relations, or managing press and/or digital for an elected official, candidate, or organization.
Experience interacting directly with members of the media including journalists, editors, and producers.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to craft a narrative and tell a story.
Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced legislative environment.
Familiarity with the Kansas legislative process is a plus, or a strong willingness and enthusiasm to learn.
Compensation:
Commensurate with experience.
Location:
This role is based in Topeka, Kansas and will require in-person work during the legislative session. Outside of session, this role can be hybrid but must be based in Kansas. This role will require some travel around the state of Kansas.
