Position Summary
The Communications Director serves as NCL’s strategic and external communications lead, setting narrative direction and advancing the organization’s vision, mission, and priorities. This role engages the press and the public, supports and educates key decision-makers, grows NCL’s membership, and ensures NCL is a prominent and respected voice on environmental issues and politics in Nevada.
This role reports to the Executive Director and works closely with Deputy Directors to advance organizational goals. The role provides strategic oversight of the communications team and partners with the Digital Media Manager on workflows and communications processes. The ideal candidate brings a creative, goal-oriented approach to communications and a strong commitment to collaborative leadership.
Key Responsibilities
● In partnership with policy, communications, and fundraising staff, develop ambitious, strategic communications plans that drive conservation policy, electoral wins, and fundraising goals. Oversee their implementation across a range of channels, including earned, digital, and paid communications.
● Lead the media relations strategy, serving as the primary point of contact for press, cultivating relationships with reporters and key partners, overseeing press events, and monitoring media coverage.
● Determine and guide organizational messaging, tone, and framing, and collaborate with the communications team to ensure consistency across platforms.
● Oversee digital communications strategy in partnership with the Digital Media Manager, including platform strategy, context execution, and audience growth.
● Produce high-quality, timely communications materials, including press releases, media advisories, statements, talking points, reports, and fact sheets.
● Identify and create media opportunities to insert NCL’s voice and perspective.
● Work with the executive team to make real-time strategic decisions, including leading rapid-response and crisis-communications strategies.
● Develop and lead media training for staff and spokespeople.
● Produce detailed reports of communications activities for staff and leadership.
● Manage and mentor a team, providing strategic direction, overseeing day-to-day functions, promoting a healthy culture of feedback, innovation, and accountability.
Qualifications
● 4-6 years working in communications, media, or a related field.
● Strong copywriting and editing skills, with experience producing content across digital and earned media.
● Demonstrated expertise in strategic communications and messaging development.
● Experience building relationships with reporters and pitching stories.
● Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
● Ability to distill complex topics into concise and compelling presentations and content.
● Proven ability to direct, coach, and motivate staff and work collaboratively in team settings.
● A working knowledge of MS Office; Google Apps; Common social media platforms; WordPress; photo and video-editing software is preferred.
● A working knowledge of Nevada’s political and media landscape and experience working on or following legislative, electoral, and/or environmental issues is a plus.
Working Conditions
This position is based in Nevada, and the employee will work remotely, with some travel and event presence required. Work is typically performed while sitting at a computer screen for extended periods. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts when operating office machines. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and sit. This position requires working indoors in environmentally controlled conditions with exposure to sounds and noise levels that may be distracting or uncomfortable. Job tasks are performed in close physical proximity to other people. Reliable transportation is required. Some evening and weekend hours are required; the workload will exceed 40 hours per week during some periods.
