Summary: The Colorado Democratic Party (CDP) seeks a Communications Director to lead a
digital-forward messaging and media relations strategy with an emphasis on rapid response,
content creation, volunteer mobilization, and social media management.
Success for a Communications Director at CDP means creating and managing relationships
with the press, overseeing all internal and external communications for the State Party with an
emphasis on new and digital media, and serving as an effective spokesperson when needed.
This role will build a dynamic online presence for the State Party and its Chair that informs,
excites, and mobilizes supporters. Through creation of fun, authentic, and engaging content and
action items, this role will drive the CDP’s narrative. A winning strategy will seamlessly blend
rapid response with storytelling, ensuring the party’s values and efforts resonate across a
variety of traditional and new media platforms. By fostering a genuine connection with
grassroots activists, candidates, and voters, the Communication Director turns stories into
action and, ultimately, electoral wins.
This role will contribute to major Party events, including fundraisers, elections, conventions, and
other key gatherings. The Communications Director reports to the Executive Director and works
closely with Party Leadership, CDP staff, consultants, and campaigns to ensure clear, strategic,
and consistent messaging across all communications channels that aids in our efforts to win
elections.
Responsibilities:
Media Engagement & Public Relations
Develop a long-term communications strategy for the CDP
Serve as an on-the-record spokesperson for the CDP , Party Chair, and other principals
Plan and execute press events, media briefings, and earned media campaigns
Monitor media coverage, create daily press clips, track developments, and identify rapid-response opportunities
Generate media opportunities for CDP and leadership at state and national levels.
Earn placement for CDP leadership across the media spectrum, including on podcasts, TV, radio, online, and print outlets.
Collaborate with stakeholders in the Democratic ecosphere to coordinate and emphasize Party-led messaging and earned-media opportunities
Develop and execute rapid response on behalf of the State Party and be prepared to help navigate the State Party through any crisis-comms situation
Messaging & Mobilization
Draft and edit press releases, talking points, speeches, op-eds, and digital content
Contribute regular action items towards mobilization of stakeholders and volunteers
Work with elected officials to amplify Democratic achievements in the press
Coordinate with national Democratic organizations, campaigns, and committees on a Colorado-centric messaging strategy
Digital & Social Media Strategy
Develop and maintain CDP presence across a wide variety of strategically important social media platforms with a focus on growth, creativity, and authenticity
Create audio and visual content native to strategically important platforms that support the CDP’s long-term communications strategy, and to engage in rapid-response opportunities
Develop and maintain relationships with influencers across a diverse array of channels
Manage and maintain CDP’s website and ensure a user-friendly experience
Training & Internal Communications
Train candidates, party leaders, and staff on media and social media best practices
Ensure message continuity across media, digital platforms, fundraising, and surrogates
Collect and maintain a database of public stories to support communications efforts
Develop an internal communications network to amplify and bolster CDP efforts
Fundraising & Events
Collaborate on fundraising messaging, strategy, and tactics with the finance team
Travel with and without CDP leadership on brief and extended statewide trips and coordinate a press plan for each trip
Qualifications:
Two years of experience in political communications, journalism, public relations, content creation, or a related field
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including on-the-record experience
Ability to develop and execute messaging strategies in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment
Experience with campaign operations, rapid response, and media relations.
Familiarity with digital communication strategies, including social media, email marketing, and website content management.
Proficiency in Google Docs, media-monitoring software, and social media tools.
Knowledge of NGP , VAN, and design programs (such as InDesign) is a plus.
