The Communications Director is responsible for driving the campaign’s messaging strategy across earned media and written communications. This role oversees press relations, manages the development and placement of written content (op-eds, press releases, statements), and ensures all external communications reflect the voice, tone, and priorities of the candidate. The Communications Director will work closely with Campaign Leadership to shape a compelling public narrative and secure positive media coverage.
Note: This role does not include day-to-day management of social media or graphic design — those responsibilities are housed in separate roles.
Key Responsibilities
Media Relations
Serve as the primary point of contact for reporters and editors.
Build and maintain media lists and relationships with local, regional, ethnic, and national press.
Draft, pitch, and place op-eds and letters to the editor.
Write and distribute press releases, advisories, and official campaign statements.
Coordinate press conferences, interviews, and editorial board meetings.
Monitor media coverage and craft rapid response messaging as needed.
Distribute daily media briefings
Prepare rapid response statements.
Writing & Messaging
Draft compelling and strategic op-eds, talking points, remarks, and public statements.
Ensure consistent messaging across all campaign materials.
Copyedit internal and external written content for clarity, style, and accuracy.
Work closely with the social and graphic team to align narrative across platforms.
Strategic Planning
Develop and execute a proactive earned media plan to elevate the candidate’s profile.
Establish a communications calendar.
Support crisis communications and reputation management when needed.
Prepare briefing materials for interviews, public appearances, and debates.
Support the candidate in media coaching.
Qualifications
2–3+ years of experience in political communications, journalism, PR, or related field.
Exceptional writing and editing skills, with a strong grasp of political messaging.
Demonstrated success placing op-eds and earned media coverage.
Experience working with members of the press and coordinating press events.
Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and respond rapidly to breaking news.
Highly organized, collaborative, and adaptable in a fast-paced campaign environment.
Commitment to the values and goals of the campaign.
