JOB DESCRIPTION

Stop the Ban (STB) is a statewide coalition of organizations and concerned citizens working to defeat a Constitutional Amendment that would overturn the reproductive freedom ballot measure passed in 2024. The proposed ban addresses multiple unrelated subjects, banning abortion and health care for transgender youth as well as changing court processes designed to make it harder to protect reproductive freedom.

 

The Communications Director will report to the Campaign Manager. They will be responsible for all aspects of the campaign’s earned media and help lead the communications strategy. STB seeks to run this campaign in a way that not only leads us to victory but also builds long-term grassroots power and infrastructure in Missouri. STB welcomes applications from both individual professionals and firms capable of fulfilling the responsibilities outlined below.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Strategic Planning:

  • Develop an earned media plan, including clear goals, timelines, and metrics for success.

  • Develop a social media plan, including proposed platform utilization and engagement.

  • Earned Media Generation:

  • Produce high-quality press materials such as releases, op-eds, public statements, speeches, talking points, presentations, media advisories, briefings, and more.

  • Oversee the creation of digital and physical campaign materials, including branding, content, design, and distribution.

  • Manage and organize media requests, press events, editorial board meetings, and other earned media opportunities.

  • Develop and pitch stories to state and national media.

  • Build and maintain deep relationships with Missouri and the national press

  • While the campaign will prioritize spokespeople from member organizations and directly-impacted Missourians, speak to reporters on the record, off the record, and on background according to the strategic needs of the campaign.

  • Coalition and Vendor Management:

  • Manage and facilitate the Communications Committee, which will include staff and volunteers from Missouri-based and national organizations.

  • Provide direct support to keep Committee members informed, engaged, and working toward shared goals.

  • Conduct message trainings, both internal and external, to deliver our message to the broader volunteer and coalition infrastructure in Missouri.

  • Manage social media and influencer program vendors. 

  • Spokesperson Management:

  • Recruit, train, and manage a bureau of spokespeople, working with various committees to maintain the integrity of existing relationships.

  • Provide clear guidance, ongoing support, and motivation to ensure spokesperson success and retention.

  • Data Analysis and Reporting:

  • Collect, analyze, and evaluate data related to earned media efforts.

  • Prepare reports detailing the impact of communication activities.

  • Prepare an end of campaign report on the earned communications program, including evaluation and reporting of metrics, lessons learned, and strategies to further build the movement for reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy in Missouri.

 

Qualifications: 

 

  • At least 3 years experience working in communications; experience cultivating and executing a press and communications strategy.

  • Collaborative spirit, a willingness and ability to work with a team to reach goals together.

  • Exceptional written communication skills.

  • Experience speaking on the record on behalf of a candidate, committee, or other political organization.

  • Understanding of how to prioritize competing responsibilities and multiple perspectives while managing rapid response moments. 

  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, prioritize tasks, and learn quickly.

  • Commitment to anti-racism, accessible abortion services, reproductive freedom, and the liberation of the entire LGBTQ+ community from discrimination and oppression.

  • Missouri ties and experience with the Missouri press is strongly preferred.
