We do this by building momentum to pass policies that lower costs for families, like paid family and medical leave, quality, affordable child care, and home and community based care for the aging and disabled.
ABOUT THE POSITION:
We are looking for an experienced campaigner to help lead communications for a large-scale issue-advocacy effort in the Hampton Roads area.
The Communications Manager will help develop and execute a robust communications strategy to hold members of Congress accountable to their constituents for their issue positions in Hampton Roads. The Communications Manager works closely with CFFE’s Virginia Campaign Director and Organizing Director to shape the communications strategy across district campaigns on progressive economic issues that impact working families. The ideal candidate is someone who has some experience in the political media environment and is not afraid of taking on new opportunities to move people to action or quickly responding to an ever-changing news cycle.
As Communications Manager, you will:
Help develop and manage a comprehensive strategic communications plan, in collaboration with the Virginia Campaign Director and Organizing Director, to maximize earned media coverage of our narrative and accountability efforts across districts.
Pitch and build relationships with reporters in the Hampton Roads area to cover our work across the districts and generate earned media hits.
Develop and manage day-to-day communications materials, rapid response efforts, and press around events as needed.
Draft social media content across platforms.
Develop website copy for the organization and update the website with press materials.
Collaborate on the creation of creative content such as graphics and video to spread the organization's message.
Work with the team to recruit, media train, and pitch strategic messengers.
Brainstorm and deploy creative earned media tactics.
Serve as a spokesperson to the press for our program issues in Hampton Roads.
Track earned media clips and report on program progress and success weekly.
About you:
You have strong written communication skills and are familiar with how to communicate about progressive issues.
Have relevant work experience on issue advocacy and/or campaigns.
You have experience with and/or will be comfortable building relationships with local, state, and national reporters and pitching press for events to garner earned media attention.
You are willing and able to help coordinate and meet with local constituents to help them tell their stories.
You are calm under pressure and nimble in a changing campaign environment.
You have a demonstrated commitment to ensuring a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace with an approach that respects and values multiple perspectives.
You are willing and able to travel.
You are willing to perform other duties as assigned.
In addition, it would be a bonus if you:
You have work experience building and deploying local, statewide, and/or national communications strategies.
Are a big picture thinker, detail-oriented, and analytical.
Have a strong sense of adventure and interest in tackling new challenges.
Are familiar with issues important to state residents.
Have a connection to the state and its communities, such as having lived or worked there.
Have pre-existing relationships with local reporters and experience with local outlets.
Have experience with lobbying, advocacy, and educational activities.
Are fluent in both English and Spanish.
Benefits and compensation:
Salary range: $66,000 - $72,000 / year
