JOB DESCRIPTION

**Position: **Sunrise Movement is hiring for a full-time Communications Manager (or Communications Lead, depending on experience) through the end of 2024 to support with press, writing, and rapid response work. They will help grow Sunrise’s reach and break through in the media and social media, working on Sunrise’s key 2024 campaigns: demanding a Climate Emergency Declaration from President Biden, electoral work, and demanding action from politicians following climate disasters. 

 

Responsibilities

Writing and rapid response - [40%]

  • Write copy for graphics and social media posts, particularly those responding to electoral and political events

  • Long-form writing (op-eds, blog posts, direct-to-camera scripts)

  • Work with Comms team to brainstorm general social media and creative content for our platforms

 

Press relations- [30%]

  • Field inquiries from reporters and pitch stories

  • Write press statements responding to current events and promoting Sunrise’s campaigning 

  • Track the news and identifying opportunities to intervene in the news cycle

 

Spokesperson development and support [10%]

  • Identify, coach, and develop volunteer spokespeople to represent Sunrise in the press and on social media 

  • Support Sunrise’s Executive Director to produce public-facing content (tweets, TikToks, op-eds) 

 

Coordination - [20%]

  • Manage priority projects for our digital and communications team

  • Coordinate with partner organizations and political campaigns on joint projects

 

Qualifications 

Must Haves

  • 2+ years doing communications work for political or issue-based campaigns

  • Experience initiating and managing partnerships

  • Comfortable writing content on a deadline

  • Experience crafting narratives and written content in other people’s voices or perspectives

  • Comfortable working with data to drive strategy around producing content for specific audiences or goals, especially BIPOC and working class audiences

  • Self-organized, able to coordinate multiple projects on tight deadlines without letting tasks slip

  • Persistent, willing to follow up with team members and partners to make sure you have all of the information and resources you need, and that everybody knows their part in your projects

  • Grounded in the connections between climate, economic, and racial justice and able to speak fluently to the intersections of these issues, familiarity with the Green New Deal

  • Approaches communications work as a way to build the movement and tell the story of the work our movement is doing
