JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary: SEIU Healthcare Michigan seeks an enthusiastic, experienced, and passionate bargainer and organizer to train & supervise internal work with members.

 

Location: Detroit, MI metro area

Travel: At least once/week in the state. This position will also travel to conferences several times/year and travel within the state to support union efforts as needed. 

 

Supervised by: Nursing Home Division Director

 

Supervises: 5-7 organizers

About the position: The role of the Contract Bargaining Supervisor will be to provide leadership, direction and development to staff and members, and coordinate large pieces of the internal organizing department in the Nursing Home Division. Under the direction of the Nursing Home Division Director and Officers, the Coordinator will lead and develop a team of internal organizers to conduct participatory and powerful campaigns to negotiate and win collective bargaining agreements and organize effective workplace member leader structures to welcome new employees, defend contracts, and communicate to all members. The Contract Bargaining Supervisor will bargain multiple complex collective bargaining agreements and develop others to lead contract campaigns.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Developing year-to-year strategies and organizing plans to build a strong union of healthcare workers across our industry;

  • Training, hiring, supervising, developing, evaluating, motivating, and holding accountable the team of internal organizers;

  • Facilitating communication across the team and with individual organizers to review and plan, drive, and assess the work of the union;

  • Working with member leaders and organizers to create and implement plans to strengthen the union;

  • Leading and supporting organizers in developing campaign plans to solve workplace problems and build power to win collective bargaining agreements;

  • Serving as the lead negotiator in major chapter collective bargaining and assisting staff in contract negotiations in the other chapters;

  • Building and sustaining productive employer relationships wherever possible;

  • Leading organizer and member participation in the union’s organizing, wider movement, and political programs;

  • Representing the union in its relationships with political, community and labor leaders and organization, as required.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • 4+ years of experience negotiating collective bargaining agreements and developing and executing contract campaigns.

  • 2+ years of experience leading, evaluating, and supervising union organizers, including experience developing: Organizing skills, member representation, program implementation, creating campaign plans, executing campaign plans, and negotiating contracts.

  • Facilitation and leadership skills working in a team and in coordination with allies.

  • Proficiency in interpersonal communication: Listening, conflict resolution, consensus building, and organizing persuasion with union members, staff, and allies.

  • Experience working with a diverse group of union staff and member leaders.

  • Ability to lead in advancing equity and inclusion of everyone in the union.

  • Experience exercising a high level of autonomous decision-making and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong planning skills, ability to discern priorities, and ability to manage multiple responsibilities and campaigns at one time.

  • Emotional intelligence and professional self-management under pressure.

  • Proficiency in professional writing and communication skills.

  • Exemplary commitment to trade union principles and the cause of labor

  • A valid U.S. driver's license and a reliable vehicle

  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken

Preferred:

  • Experience working in the healthcare field.

  • Experience with external organizing campaigns.

  • Experience leading a bargaining table.

  • Experience leading a contract campaign.

  • Knowledge of union history, organization, and strategy.

 

Salary and Benefits: 

Salary: $90,000.

The work schedule can at times be greater than 40 hours per week and includes evening, weekend, and holiday meetings and events, as necessary. It is not a strictly 9am-5pm position.
