JOB DESCRIPTION

The NYC Public Engagement Unit (PEU) connects New Yorkers to key City services – housing, healthcare, transit, emergency services, and much more. We bust through bureaucracy to make government work. We connect with hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers every year. PEU is democratic service at its best -- an inspiring place to work.

About Us: Our Data & Analytics Team plays a pivotal role in all of PEU's programs. We find the New Yorkers most in need, and give our outreach teams the tools to help them. We're a tight-knit, high-skill team of eight folks within the larger PEU team of 250. We've got big ambitions.

About You: You, our future Data & Analytics Director, are an accomplished manager of both people and projects. You have leadership experience on some sort of data team; perhaps within a political campaign? Government agency? Nonprofit organization? Tech startup?

Frankly, your leadership and project management skills are more important than your technical skills. You can work with data, but you can also translate for non-technical collaborators. You're a great traffic cop, expertly triaging requests and balancing priorities. Folks like working with you.

Perhaps most importantly, you want to have real, tangible impact on people's lives. You care less about flashy titles and stock options, and more about making a difference. And through all its joys and pains, you love New York City.

About the Role: The Data & Analytics Director will oversee the day-to-day work of the Data Team. That means:

  • Analyze data to make key decisions about PEUs outreach initiatives, including who to target, what messages to use, and how to reach people.

  • Train non-technical staff on using data tools, like how to cut lists or track outcomes.

  • Triage incoming requests for Data staff time, assigning work among the team.

  • Oversee development of the reports, dashboards and analytics tools that our Executive Team and staff rely on every day.

  • Oversee our outreach and case management tools, which include EveryAction/VAN, Mobilize, Hustle, and Salesforce.

  • Oversee our technical infrastructure, which includes AWS / Redshift databases, Looker Studio visualization tools, and many custom-built dashboards and reports.

  • Identify new strategies, tools, and technologies that could further PEU’s work.

  • Evaluate programmatic effectiveness over time to improve our efficiency.

  • Manage up to five direct reports, and possibly layers underneath them.

  • Report to the Senior Director of Data & Analytics.

Salary: $100,000 - $115,000

Location: New York City (multiple offices: 253 Broadway, 260 11th Avenue)

Benefits: Exceptional! Healthcare, pension, dental/vision, life insurance, generous vacation, and much more

(Note: Details are not officially confirmed and are pending finalization with the formal job posting.)

Qualifications

  • 6+ years work experience in a data-related field, including 2+ years managing others.

  • Working knowledge of campaign data tools and techniques, including the tools listed above.

  • Ability to manage and analyze data in SQL, Python, R, or a similar scripted tool.

  • Experience translating non-technical requests into technical requirements, and technical jargon into plain language.

  • A belief in the power of local government to improve people's lives.
