Position Overview

The ** Deputy Communications Director** helps drive the Minnesota DFL’s day-to-day communications operation, turning strategy and priorities into timely, effective execution across press, digital, and content functions.

 

Reporting to the Senior Director of Communications, Research, and Data, the Deputy Communications Director is a fast, highly organized communications operator with excellent judgment. They manage complex workstreams from start to finish, anticipate needs, and help ensure the DFL’s communications priorities move from strategy through execution and impact.

 

Key Responsibilities

The Deputy Communications Director will:

Communications Management & Execution

  • Work closely with the Senior Director, Communications, Research, and Data to translate broad communications strategy and priorities into clear workplans, deliverables, timelines, and next steps.

  • Manage complex communications projects and workflows from concept through completion, coordinating contributors, decisions, and deadlines to move the work forward, ​​stepping in personally to execute when needed.

  • Serve as a central point of coordination for day-to-day communications execution, collaborating across the Communications, Research, and Data department and the larger organization.

  • Manage the communications calendar, anticipate upcoming needs and opportunities, and proactively identify next steps and resolve gaps or obstacles.

 

Communications & Content Development

  • Draft and edit communications materials as needed, including message guidance, talking points, press releases, scripts, social and digital copy, remarks, and other written communications as assigned.

  • Review, proofread, and strengthen content produced across the team for clarity, accuracy, message discipline, and consistency.

  • Translate strategy, research, polling, policy, and political developments into effective communications across channels.

  • Ensure a consistent DFL voice and narrative across channels.

 

Rapid Response

  • Maintain a rapid-response pipeline that moves breaking news and research quickly from identification through message development and distribution across channels.

  • Coordinate with press, digital, research, data, and other departments as needed to determine the appropriate response, assign next steps, and ensure timely execution.

  • Proactively flag developments and opportunities that warrant a response and recommend how the DFL should communicate about them.

 

Other

  • Assist with additional communications-related projects as assigned by the Senior Director, Communications, Research, and Data.

  • Ability to synthesize complex information into clear, persuasive communications

  • A proactive, collaborative, and “all-hands-on-deck” approach to getting work done

 

Additional qualifications that will help you succeed in this role:

  • Experience in political, campaign, government, advocacy, public affairs, or another fast-based communications environment

  • Experience managing complex projects or workflows involving multiple contributors

  • Experience in rapid response communications

  • Familiarity with digital and social media communications

  • Ability to respond quickly to breaking news and rapidly changing priorities

  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as campaign needs require
