Organizational Overview

The Democracy Defenders family of organizations (a c3, c4, legally separate PAC, and The Contrarian) is a leader in the fight against authoritarianism, working strategically in the courts and court of public opinion to restore American democracy by: upholding the rule of law, safeguarding free and fair elections, and fighting corruption.

 

Role Purpose

The Development Associate bridges the gap between high-level fundraising strategy and day-to-day execution, working closely with the Development Manager to ensure effective funding support for our mission.

Responsibilities

Material Preparation 

  • Under the direction of the Development Manager, prepare written materials and presentations for fundraising meetings and follow up communications with prospective donors (for external fundraising partner, Executive Director, and Executive Chair).  

  • Assist with drafting fundraising emails, general updates, and other donor collateral.

  • Assist in drafting grant proposals and reports. 

  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of current legal casework and organizational priorities.

  • Translate complex legal topics into compelling donor narratives.

  • Collaborate with staff across various departments to gather data, project updates, and "wins" for use in funder reports and talking points.

 

Project Management

  • Maintain a meticulous calendar of award records, disbursements, requirements, and deadlines.

  • Manage the technical execution of email campaigns via Constant Contact, including calendar, list segmentation, template building, and performance tracking. 

 

Qualifications

  • 1-2 years for assistant level or 3+ years for associate level in fundraising, communications, or a high-level administrative role

  • Experience in a political or nonprofit environment preferred.

  • Experience in email marketing or donor writing preferred. 

  • Exceptional and proven ability to write clearly and persuasively. 

  • Ability to manage complex sets of data and ability to create and manage spreadsheets.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with competing priorities.

  • Professionalism and poise with high level audiences.

  • Unwavering commitment to defeating election sabotage and denial, fighting autocracy, and building a resilient democracy; Experience (professional, volunteer, or otherwise) advancing democracy, election integrity, and the rule of law. 

  • Commitment to diversity and inclusivity and an ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures, backgrounds, and beliefs. 

 

Role and Compensation Details 

  • This role is ideally based in the Washington DC/ DMV area. Candidates who are available for in person tasks and meetings will be given preference, but we are open to this role being remote for the right candidate. 

  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required

  • The Development Associate sits in our Development team and reports to the Development Manager.

  • This role primarily supports Democracy Defenders Action c4 and Democracy Defenders Fund c3. This role may also involve some support of Democracy Defenders PAC, as bandwidth permits.

  • The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $85,000, commensurate with experience.
