$100,000 - $110,000 annually

About the Position
Progressive Maryland was founded to empower communities to act for social and economic justice by developing leaders and cultivating allies in order to build a grassroots movement with the power to advance economic, racial, and environmental equity. We are made up of over 125,000 individual members and supporters and dozens of affiliated religious, community and labor organizations statewide.
The Development Director will provide strategic leadership in the planning, implementation, integration, and evaluation of Progressive Maryland’s foundation and individual giving fundraising strategies. They will lead in achieving the organization’s revenue goals, increasing income, and educating and engaging more individuals and institutions in the work of Progressive Maryland.
They collaborate with the Executive Director and Deputy Executive Director to build Progressive Maryland’s annual development plan and to expand the organization’s donor base. The Development Director supervises the Grants Manager and supports them in preparing grant proposals and reports for funders, tracking deadlines for RFPs and reports and ensuring timely submission of all materials to funders, conducting research to identify new potential funding partners, and planning fundraising events.
The Development Director also works in concert with our organizing and communications teams to ensure accurate tracking of grant metrics and to gather that data as well as stories of impact, digital content, photos, and other similar material to tell Progressive Maryland’s story to current and prospective funders.

Duties Include
The new Development Director will divide their time among several functions. A general breakdown of the position’s primary responsibilities includes:
Individual & Major Donors (35%)
Represent Progressive Maryland at philanthropic meetings and events.
Work with the Executive Director and Deputy Executive Director on their portfolios of high potential donors
Maintain and expand giving relationships with existing major donors
Work to elevate low and mid-dollar donors to the major donor level
Actively prospect potential new donors to bring into and expand the major donor base
Foundation & Grants Management (30%)
Collaborate with the Grants Manager to plan and lead our Annual Gala fundraiser, which is geared toward our members, legislators, and other stakeholders.
Working with the Deputy Executive Director, create and expand their existing portfolio of foundations giving to Progressive Maryland
Create and maintain relationships with the appropriate people in identified foundation prospects
Research, vet, and apply to new foundations to expand Progressive Maryland’s revenue
Create the required reports and communications with foundations as needed
Management & Administration (15%)
Work closely with the Deputy Executive Director to establish annual fundraising goals, to create annual development plans, and to develop annual organizational and departmental budgets.
Track proposal and reporting deadlines, ensure that all submitted materials are accurate and comply with any funder requirements. Review and edit materials drafted by the Grants Manager ahead of submission.
Collaborate with the Communications team to produce high-quality annual reports, digital fundraising appeals, and compelling fundraising materials.
Work with the Deputy Executive Director to prepare fundraising reports for Progressive Maryland’s Board of Directors.
Supervise our Grants Manager, providing on-going guidance, direction, and motivation, delegating appropriately and ensuring strong internal communication and coordination, and evaluating performance and providing opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Maintain and keep the database up to date
Strategy & Planning (15%)
Using historical data and smart projections, create and implement an organizational development plan
Look for and assess ways to diversify and increase revenue sources for the organization
In time, implement a plan to expand the Development team through additional hires or use of skilled consultants
Work with the communications team to expand donor awareness of the organization
Skills and Qualifications
Experience: At least 6 years of experience as a fundraising professional in a nonprofit organization. Experience working directly with major donors and foundations is required. Demonstrated experience in managing and implementing a successful, comprehensive fundraising program and preparing work plans to achieve goals. Experience with both C3 and C4 organizations is highly preferred.
Track record of success: Demonstrated success in identifying and securing increased funds from current and prospective, foundation, and individual donors through a coordinated, strategic approach.
Creativity and Innovation: Ability to see opportunities, think creatively, and develop new approaches for development.
Self-direction: Track record of taking initiative and working independently. Takes initiative and actively seeks to deepen current donor relationships and to forge new ones. Ability to be self-sufficient in a small staff environment.
Management: Experience in managing direct reports in an effective way as well as in building out a development team is preferred.
Communications: Skilled in creating powerful, compelling written and oral communications for fundraising. Strong relationship building and “people” skills.
Prioritization, Time Management and Detail Orientation: Excellent organizational and time-management skills, detail-oriented, including ability to manage multiple tasks independently. Ability to set and meet goals, prioritize, plan, manage, and complete work on deadlines.
Understanding of Progressive Politics: An understanding of, and a passion for, the role Progressive Maryland plays in the progressive organizing space is essential to the success of this person.
