JOB DESCRIPTION

About the Campaign and Candidate

Zach Wahls is an Iowa State Senator, nationally recognized advocate, and Democratic candidate for US Senate in Iowa running to unseat two-term incumbent Senator Joni Ernst in 2026. As the former Senate Minority Leader, Zach is a respected legislator and leading voice in Iowa politics. Our campaign is committed to bringing Iowa values back to Washington, focusing on policies that benefit working families, strengthen rural communities, and restore accountable leadership to the U.S. Senate. We're building an innovative, energetic campaign that engages voters across all 99 counties and showcases Zach's unique ability to connect with Iowans from all walks of life while centering his passion for service and his dedication to reform. The stakes in this race could not be higher — if this campaign is successful, it is likely that this seat will determine control of the United States Senate in 2027.

Position Overview

The Digital Communications Director will lead the development and execution of a compelling, people-centered digital strategy that brings the campaign to life online. In this high-stakes U.S. Senate race, the Digi Comms Director will focus on creating authentic, story-driven content that resonates deeply with Iowans while also connecting with Democrats across the country who care about regaining control of the Senate Majority.

This role requires a strategic thinker who understands how to translate real-life experiences, local voices, and the values at stake in this election into digital content that drives engagement, trust, and action. The ideal candidate is a skilled communicator, comfortable working across platforms, and passionate about using digital media to amplify underrepresented stories and connect with everyday people—not just the political echo chamber.

Core Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive digital strategy centered on authenticity, storytelling, and voter engagement

  • Create and oversee digital content that is people-forward—featuring the voices, faces, and concerns of Iowans from all walks of life

  • Manage the campaign’s social media presence (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, Bluesky, YouTube, TikTok, etc.), ensuring the content is timely, responsive, and true to the candidate’s voice and values

  • Lead the creation of graphics, video, copy, and multimedia content that performs well across platforms and speaks to both local and national audiences

  • Collaborate across departments (communications, field, organizing, fundraising) to highlight real stories and meaningful campaign moments

  • Rapidly respond to news developments and opposition attacks in a way that keeps the campaign rooted in its core message and the lived experience of Iowans

  • Analyze digital performance and use data to optimize strategy and content

  • Coordinate with consultant team as needed to ensure the campaign brand is consistent across all modes of communication

  • Ensure all content reflects the campaign’s commitment to accessibility, inclusion, and reaching a diverse coalition of voters

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in digital communications, campaigns, advocacy, or creative media

  • A strong eye for narrative, with demonstrated ability to craft digital content that feels personal, grounded, and compelling

  • Experience producing short-form video for platforms like Instagram Reels, TikTok, or YouTube Shorts

  • Skilled in using design and content tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) and social scheduling tools

  • Deep understanding of how to build digital communities and mobilize them into action

  • Excellent writing and storytelling skills, with an understanding of how to connect with both rural and urban voters, and people outside the traditional political bubble

  • Collaborative and flexible, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment

  • Commitment to the values of equity, dignity, and opportunity—and to building a campaign that reflects the people it seeks to serve
