JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Overview
The Sylvia Wright for Superintendent of Education campaign is seeking a skilled and motivated ** Director of Communications** to lead our communications strategy, manage media relations, and oversee campaign messaging. The Director of Communications will ensure that our campaign’s vision and priorities are clearly communicated to voters, supporters, and the media. This role requires creativity, organization, and the ability to work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Scope of Work & Responsibilities
Strategic Messaging
- Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy aligned with campaign goals.
- Craft press releases, speeches, talking points, op-eds, and other written materials.
- Ensure consistency of messaging across all platforms and outreach efforts.
Media Relations
- Build and maintain relationships with local, state, and national media outlets.
- Manage press inquiries and coordinate interviews, press conferences, and media appearances.
- Monitor media coverage and provide daily/weekly press reports to the campaign team.
Digital & Social Media
- Oversee the campaign’s social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn).
- Create content calendars and ensure timely, engaging posts that align with campaign messaging.
- Monitor analytics and adjust strategies to maximize online engagement and reach.
Internal & External Communications
- Collaborate with campaign leadership to draft communications to supporters, volunteers, and stakeholders.
- Manage email blasts, newsletters, and text message campaigns.
- Support surrogate speakers and prepare communications toolkits for volunteers and endorsers.
Rapid Response
- Monitor current events and provide quick-turnaround responses to breaking news.
- Develop strategies to counter misinformation and ensure accurate campaign representation.
Preferred Qualifications
- 3–5 years of experience in political campaigns, advocacy organizations, public relations, or related communications roles.
- Strong writing, editing, and public speaking skills.
- Experience managing social media platforms and digital advertising tools.
- Ability to think strategically while also managing day-to-day communications needs.
- Knowledge of South Carolina’s political landscape and education issues is a plus.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
