JOB DESCRIPTION

About Magnitude Media

Magnitude Media is a new kind of communications organization dedicated to winning the battle for attention, emotion and meaning. We are building infrastructure to align and scale voices on the left so they can break through today’s fragmented media landscape. Our partners include elected officials, influential creators, and cutting-edge digital media organizations. We monitor emerging narratives, convene aligned messengers, and train leaders to show up where Americans actually consume content. Our work is year-round, data-driven, and designed to help the Left stop reacting and start shaping the conversations that matter.

Description

Position Summary

Our team is growing rapidly, and this role will require a mix of data science skills, data engineering, and AI implementation expertise to guide the development of our tech stack. This role will manage one analyst and own the relationship with our data science firm and other key vendors, with the goal of developing new metrics and classification methods for social listening.

Responsibilities

Enhance the quality of insights from our social media data

  • Use advanced statistical and machine learning methods to develop new metrics for interpreting our vast social listening database in order to understand what type of content and issues are performing well online.

  • Work with our data science vendor, Blue Rose Research, to develop, quality check, and integrate LLM-based enrichments.

  • Expand on existing approaches or pilot new approaches to topic classification and keyword analysis.

Guide the continued development of our social listening infrastructure

  • In partnership with the Vice President of Analytics, evaluate potential new data sources and lead their integration into our existing tech stack.

  • Evaluate existing data pipelines and database structure and make recommendations for improved efficiency.

Conduct in-depth analysis

  • Periodically lead on deep-dive analyses on specific topics, such as identifying components of a successful Facebook Reel or identifying characteristics of anomalous social media posts that may have been artificially amplified.

  • Conduct network analysis to identify social media actors that frequently amplify, respond to, or are featured in each other’s content.

Inform AI adoption

  • Make recommendations for opportunities to augment existing workflows with AI tools, especially in translating dense datasets to actionable insights for external and internal stakeholders.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.

  • 5+ years of experience in data science or machine learning, preferably with a focus on politics or social impact.

  • Advanced expertise working with SQL databases

  • Advanced expertise in Python (fluency in R is a plus)

  • Experience working with messy, real-world data

  • Strong programming and debugging skills, with an eye towards detail and developing scalable systems

Preferred

  • Hands-on experience using Google BigQuery and deploying related Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services (e.g., Cloud Composer, Cloud Run, Cloud Scheduler, Cloud Storage, Workflows, Secrets Manager, Looker)

  • Experience working in collaborative, multi-disciplinary teams

  • Experience working with DBT
