John F. Butler is a former federal prosecutor, having served in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia and as an Assistant Attorney General under Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring. A veteran of the U.S. Navy JAG Corps, he continues to serve as a Commander in the Navy Reserves Judiciary Unit. Now, he is running for Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney to build a safer, stronger Norfolk – because everyone deserves to feel safe, no matter who they are or where they come from.

The campaign is seeking a Field Director to manage his organizing program. Using a range of tactics, they will work to help build a field plan, persuade voters, mobilize communities, and recruit volunteers and interns across Norfolk.

The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of grassroots organizing, including experience working with base-building organizations and directing grassroots campaigns. The expected salary range for this position is $3,500-$4,500 per month through June. This is a full time position based in Norfolk, VA and will require a willingness to work non-traditional hours as needed.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist the Campaign Manager with building the field plan

  • Direct and coordinate the work of the campaign’s direct voter contact efforts

  • Recruit, train, and manage a diverse team of volunteers and interns across Norfolk to conduct direct voter contact

  • ​​Coordinate and staff volunteer events including but not limited to in person canvasses, phone banks, and community meetings

  • Utilize a number of tactics and tools to hit daily and weekly metric goals

  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience in Norfolk or the Hampton Roads region is preferred

  • At least one cycle of organizing

  • Experience managing volunteers and building lasting relationships

  • Ready to adapt and be flexible during the campaign to meet team goals and objectives

  • Committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for people of diverse backgrounds

  • Ability to track and report data in a timely, consistent, and accurate manner

  • Reliable access to a car, phone, and laptop, with the ability to travel as needed

  • Capable of managing various projects and prioritizing overlapping deadlines

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

 

Time Expectations and Compensation

Job Type: Full-time, with evening, weekend, and some holiday availability

Pay: $3,500-$4,500 per month through June. Salary commensurate with experience.
