About the Race
Joe Vogel is running for Congress in Maryland’s 6th Congressional District. Joe was born in Uruguay and moved to Maryland as a toddler. A community leader turned State Delegate, Joe is now running to represent Central and Western Maryland in Congress.
In the legislature Joe supported a number of progressive causes, but made a name for himself by passing legislation to make historic investments attracting more mental health professionals in Maryland public schools, combat the rise in hate crimes through the establishment of the Commission on Hate Crime Response and Prevention, and address the fentanyl crisis by dramatically improving fentanyl testing processes in Maryland hospitals through the Josh Siems Act.
Just as important as this legislative track record is the fresh perspective Joe would bring to Congress as one of the few gay, Latino, Gen-Z legislators running for Congress. Our country is in desperate need of new voices in government, voices from the communities of color, young people, and progressives who are committed to addressing issues like climate change, gun violence, and the attacks on our democratic systems and institutions. Joe is running to add his voice to the halls of Congress and fight on behalf of these communities.
In 2020, Maryland’s 6th Congressional District was redistricted heavily, moving from a reliable D+6 to now a D+2. In 2022, the National Republican Campaign Committee heavily targeted the seat, running an extremist candidate against incumbent David Trone. Now, with Representative David Trone running for the Senate, this seat is open, and will once again be targeted by Republicans. While the district is rated “Likely Democrat” by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report for the 2024 cycle, the decision by Republicans to spend millions will undoubtedly make this one of the most critical races in the path towards ensuring Democrat control of the House of Representatives.
