JOB DESCRIPTION

The Minnesota DFL Party is hiring a Finance Director. The Finance Director will develop and implement the finance plan, manage all fundraising programs, including direct mail, digital fundraising (email, sms, ads), call time, large events, small events, major donor fundraising, and more. Qualified applicants will have demonstrated skills in the above fundraising programs. The Finance Director should have experience working closely with donors, labor partners, tribal partners, and principals. The Director should have management experience and will manage a finance team, including a Deputy Finance Director and multiple consultants. The Finance Director reports to the Executive Director and the DFL Chair.

Minimum Qualifications: An applicant must have at least these qualifications and, except in an extraordinary case, will not be considered without them:

  • At least 2-3 cycles of political fundraising experience. 

  • Strong commitment to electing Democrats.

  • Experience executing a finance plan and managing multiple fundraising programs. 

  • Experience managing staff and consultants. 

  • Exemplary time management, planning, and organizational skills.

  • Detail-oriented and able to prioritize and manage multiple projects and staff.

  • Experience with NGP, ActBlue, and other fundraising tools.

  • An understanding of federal and/or state election and campaign finance law.

**Preferred Qualifications: **These additional qualifications, while not absolutely essential, are highly preferred and will significantly bolster an application:

  • Experience in and knowledge of the political landscape in Minnesota including key donor, labor, tribal, and political relationships. 

  • Understanding of and experience with digital fundraising tools (SMS tools, email tools, call time tools, etc)

**Organization: **The Finance Director leads the Finance department and reports to the Executive Director (and, through the Executive Director, to the State Chair).

Duties: The Finance Director will:

  • Create and execute a short and long term fundraising plan for the Party and ensure all programs meet goals. 

  • Build and execute flagship DFL fundraising dinners, the Humphrey Mondale Dinner and Founders Day dinner, coordinating with labor partners, tribal partners, elected partners, donors, and others.

  • Oversee all other DFL fundraisers, working with the Deputy Finance Director to identify event hosts, raise to meet event goals, coordinate with venues, and prepare for call time

  • Manage a robust direct mail program, which includes creating targeted mail lists, investing in prospecting, coordinating with consultants on artwork and messaging, and tracking key metrics to measure success. 

  • Manage a robust digital program including directing a digital team on email, SMS, and ad strategy, approving all email and SMS copy, directing the acquisition strategy in coordination with the digital vendor, and reporting on digital metrics to the Chair and Executive Director.

  • Manage finance databases while also conducting research on current and potential contributors, and prospect for new donors.

  • Hire, train, and manage finance staff, performing reviews and encouraging staff development, reviewing staff functions, and restructuring job responsibilities, if necessary.

  • Schedule meetings, arrange briefings, and nurture relationships with stakeholders, individual contributors, labor organizations, tribal partners, business groups, issue advocacy groups, party leaders, elected officials, and candidate campaigns.

  • Coordinate with the Deputy Finance Director to oversee the DFL webstore and promote merchandise through online advertising and email campaigns.

  • Manage a call time program by conducting donor research, preparing call sheets, staffing call time with the DFL Chair, and conducting timely follow-ups. 

  • Coordinate with the Deputy Finance Director to conduct accurate and timely donor follow-up and acknowledgment.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Compensation: Commensurate with experience, with initial salary band of $90,000-$110,000. Employees of the DFL are paid on a bi-weekly basis and receive a competitive benefits package including health care and dental.
