JOB DESCRIPTION

OVERVIEW

The Head of Civic Engagement and Field Organizing will work to advance the mission of Action for the Climate Emergency (ACE), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to educating and activating millions of young people to end the era of fossil fuels, accelerate the deployment of renewable energy, and ultimately avoid the worst impacts of the climate emergency.

 

This is a full-time, remote position based anywhere in the United States. The Head of Civic Engagement and Field Organizing will work from a home office and will participate in regular in-person events, field-based work, and internal and external meetings. The Head of Civic Engagement and Field Organizing will also meet regularly by video chat with ACE team members, partners, vendors, young people and funders. Candidates must be available for regular travel within the United States.

JOB SUMMARY

 

The Head of Civic Engagement and Field Organizing is responsible for directing and overseeing the organization’s state-based civic engagement field activities and issue organizing activities within the context of ACE’s 2024 Strategic Plan. 

This position is a key senior leadership position on the executive team, overseeing the Senior National Field Director, the National Organizing Director, the Legislative Director, and a Digital Campaign Manager, as well as their respective in-state teams in the field. The Head of Civic Engagement and Field Organizing will lead and support the day-to-day implementation of related field-based civic engagement and issue organizing programs in partnership with the Senior Head of Programs, the direct supervisor for this role. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead strategy development and execution for all field-based civic engagement work and field-based issue organizing work at the organization. 

  • Oversee all aspects of field-based voter registration collection in ACE’s key states, including calculating goals and metrics, and tracking progress to goals.

  • Oversee all aspects of field-based issue organizing work, including local, state and federal advocacy to end the era of fossil fuels, accelerate the deployment of renewable energy, and ultimately avoid the worst impacts of the climate emergency.

  • Analyze, interpret, and develop solutions for complex policy issues, and work to influence public policy related to climate and the clean energy transition through our field-based issue organizing work. 

  • Manages multiple staff including director-level staff, their indirect reports, and upwards of 300 seasonal canvassing staff.

  • Works closely across departments within ACE to ensure close collaboration and clear and consistent communication across the organization. 

  • Develop and maintain effective and productive relationships with vendors, consultants, business partners, governmental agencies, and other organizations. 

  • Assist with organizational involvement in movement moments and events.

  • Assist with related special projects as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10+ years of work experience in the areas of field-based climate campaigning and civic engagement. Field-based organizing on climate or clean energy, and leading large-scale voter registration canvassing operations, are both must-have work experiences. 

  • Experience analyzing, interpreting and advocating for climate and clean energy policies 

  • Field-based experience leading canvassing operations for voter registration, GOTV or other  civic engagement outcomes 

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills 

  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills

  • Ability to manage priorities and workflow

  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize projects with autonomy and limited information 

  • Ability to work independently and as a member of various teams and committees

  • Proven leadership and business acumen skills 

  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines

  • Strong interpersonal skills

POSITION DETAILS

  • Annual salary range: $150,000-$170,000, commensurate with experience
