About Us:

Common Defense, the nation’s largest organization of progressive veterans, is experiencing a thrilling period of growth, expansion, and heightened interest from current and potential institutional funders and partners. Common Defense is the only veterans’ movement that invests in the leadership of its members through organizer training and deployment in grassroots campaigns that leverage the credibility of their service. With a 501c3, a 501c4, and a PAC, we are a BIPOC-led family of organizations that coordinates a membership of 380,000 veterans, military families, and supporters, and over 2,500 highly engaged and mobilized veteran “Corps” members in every state.

In order to meet this increased demand and ensure that our foreign policy, climate justice, democracy and counter-extremism campaigns can continue to thrive, Common Defense is seeking to hire an organized, energetic, results-oriented Institutional Giving Manager. This role will draft grant proposals and reports for both 501c3 and 501c4 activities, prospecting for new funding opportunities, maintaining organizational materials and collateral and ensuring that funders and potential funders have the most accurate and persuasive information available. This is an ideal position for a motivated development professional who is looking to join a growing organization in a period of great possibility. This is a full time position and reports to the Director of Development, working closely with the Executive Director, Senior Campaigns Director and other senior staff.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Maintain prospect list of foundations and other institutional funders

  • Track which prospects to engage next according to organization’s evolving program planning and funding cycles

  • Maintain deadline calendar for all reports, proposals and funder updates

  • Organize and maintain folder with all one-pagers, decks and external communications collateral

  • Conduct prospect research to identify new funding opportunities

  • Draft proposals and reports and collaborate with program staff and Development Director to compile compelling, comprehensive requests for funding

  • Ensure proposals and reports comply with relevant restrictions for 501c3 or 501c4 funding to accurately reflect the nature of the activities conducted

  • Collect all necessary attachments for institutional grant submissions and reports

  • Work closely with the Development Coordinator to ensure our CRM is updated with institutional funder and partner information

  • Attend funder meetings and serve as a representative of Common Defense when appropriate

  • Stay abreast of funding news and trends within the progressive and veteran funding spaces

Qualifications:

  • BA required; 4-5 years of work experience in development and/or fundraising preferred

  • Commitment to Common Defense’s mission and the veterans and military families constituency

  • Strong analytical, verbal, written, organizational and communication skills

  • Keen attention to detail, and a quick learner

  • Ability to think and work quickly and efficiently, and communicate effectively with team members

  • Experience with CRM data management software preferred (EveryAction or similar)

  • Strong ethics and discretion with sensitive material

  • Willingness to be flexible, open-minded, and a highly engaged team player
