JOB DESCRIPTION

Sunrise Movement, a youth-led organization dedicated to fighting the climate crisis and for the Green New Deal, is hiring a Membership Organizer!

 

We're looking for an organizer experienced in  leading trainings to join our Membership Team in working to **build power with young people across race and class. **The Member Organizer will join the Membership Team in building a strong multi racial cross class leadership and prepare our movement for rigorous mass disruption.

**Position Title: **Membership Organizer

**Hours: **Full Time

**Location: **Flexible, work from home (remote). Will require some travel throughout the year. 

Start date: ASAP, possibly end of April

Reports to: Membership Manager

**Eligibility: **This position is eligible to participate in Sunrise’s CWA Labor Union. 

Compensation: $56K-$65,512 annually depending on years of experience. In addition, Sunrise provides a special city allowance if hire resides in a metro/micro area

  • Strong training and facilitation skills

Responsibilities

Trainings & Coaching [45%]

  • Finesse and run our Online Skills Training series: a new + regular training series that offers development to movement members in key skills (i.e. 1:1s, establishing an onboarding process, meeting facilitation, direct action, onboarding, grassroots fundraising, etc.)

  • Create and manage a volunteer team to support the work to put on trainings (e.g., recruit for the trainings, facilitate the trainings, work with other staff members to develop curriculum for the trainings)

  • Support with the trainings program (which includes coaching hub members and leaders on putting on trainings within their regions)  

  • Support Membership Director in building out, developing and maintaining curriculum for the Sunrise Trainings Program 

  • Support with other Sunrise trainings, including Training of Trainers and Black/Latine/Indigenous Caucus trainings 

 

Decentralized and Distributed Organizing [20%]

  • Under the National campaign, support with coaching and training of new and current members post digital and distributed action opportunities 

  • Use distributed digital tools to create digital action opportunities such as call your Reps tool, Letter to the Editor, and other creative tactics.

  • Mobilize the public to take part in digital actions 

  • Design and lead mass calls 

  • Organize, train, and coach Sunrise members to take part in distributed tactics such as in person teach-ins and days of action. 

  • Possibly support or take lead in developing a coaching network of volunteer organizers

 

Membership Comms [15%]

  • Help create communication channels and write copy (e.g., emails, texts, Slack messages, videos) to make sure Sunrise members are clear on key updates, key resources, programs, and asks, and are able to communicate across the movement to other hub members and leaders) 

 

Logistical/Administration [10%]

  • Complete all administrative tasks required of a Sunrise employee, such as attending weekly all hands calls, doing timesheets, participating in staff trainings or retreats, completing weekly management check in calls

 

Qualifications 

Must Haves

  • At least a year of organizing experience

  • Strong facilitation and training skills

  • Strong coaching skills and orientation towards developing leaders (e.g., much of the work includes coaching and developing members and leaders) 

  • Strong basebuilding & organizing skills (e.g., 1:1, canvassing, recruitment, direct action) 

  • Has experience with  digital tools (e.g., EveryAction, Mobilize, AirTable, Scale2Win) 

  • Can work well on teams

  • Alignment with Sunrise theory of change of building people power and political power

  • Is able to articulate personal stake in organizing across race and class

  • Strong alignment with the Sunrise theory of change and guiding policy

  • Believes in the power of students and workers to transform society 

  • Willingness and ability to travel as needed 

 

Nice to Haves

  • Experience organizing Black & Latine and poor & working class young people

  • Experience planning and leading nonviolent direct actions

  • Graphic design skills
