JOB DESCRIPTION

Organization Overview

Progress North Carolina (PNC) and its sister organization, Progress North Carolina Action (PNCA), serve as North Carolina’s progressive communications hub. We operate as a center for innovative research, data-driven messaging, training, and communication strategies for the progressive community and its elected allies to shift the narrative around good governance and reshape what is possible by advocating for progressive policies, leaders, and civil servants ready to serve North Carolinians.

Position Overview

The Messaging Manager will report to the Messaging Director and will work to keep track of internal and external public opinion research, draft and review message guidance documents, and provide communications support. This mid-level position will be an integral part in ensuring that PNCA continues to produce persuasive political messaging and creative content during this critical Election Year and beyond.

The Messaging Manager will work both within the Messaging Department and with the organization’s Research, Communications, and Digital teams on message creation and delivery. We are looking for a team player who is comfortable with both numbers and words, eager to learn and grow, and is passionate about progressive causes. ** This is a hybrid role with frequent meetings in our Raleigh office.**

Duties will include:

  • Attend national and partner public opinion research briefings and synthesize key findings and recommendations for PNCA staff

  • Assist the Messaging Director with the management of internal public opinion research projects: review questionnaires and polling results, organize feedback, create slides, etc.

  • Conduct research into key issue areas and policies to inform messaging guidance

  • Create documents and presentations to deliver messaging guidance to interested groups

  • Write articles, blog posts, and other creative content to highlight progressive achievements and hot-button current events

  • Proofread communications documents for grammar, style, and consistency

Ideal candidates will have:

  • 2-4 years of experience working in political communications, public opinion research, or a related capacity

  • Demonstrable experience creating messaging for a political candidate or issue advocacy campaign

  • An understanding and interest in North Carolina and national politics: you keep up with current events, are familiar with a variety of news sources, and care about progressive causes

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills: you love writing and editing, are comfortable with public speaking, and can work quickly and with quality on deadline

  • Strong analysis and synthesis skills: you are able to break down complex ideas into understandable segments, and can often see the overall pattern from a group of ideas

  • Familiarity with political polling or other social science quantitative/qualitative research

Compensation: The salary range for this position is $60,000-$70,000. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance (100% employer-paid for employees; 50% employer-paid for dependents) and paid time off comprising nine holidays, 10 vacation days, five personal days, and six sick days per year.

How to Apply: Please email a cover letter and resume to jobs@progressnc.org and include “Messaging Manager” in the subject heading.
