OVERVIEW

From August 19-22, 2024, Democrats from all over the country will gather together in the City of Chicago to participate in the Democratic National Convention, where we will nominate President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for re-election. The Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) is assembling a diverse team with skills in community engagement, event logistics, finance, operations, IT, and more. The DNCC team will oversee and deliver on all aspects of the planning and execution of this Convention, from housing the delegates to convening Platform Committee meetings to producing the Convention’s live programming, which will be seen by hundreds of millions of people around the world.

SUMMARY

As the Network Architect you will lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of a robust and high-capacity wired and wireless network infrastructure to accommodate tens of thousands of users. Collaborating closely with vendors, you will ensure the successful deployment of technologies to provide seamless connectivity and enhance the overall experience of convention attendees.

REPORTING STRUCTURE

  • Reports to Director of Technology

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Network Design and Planning: Develop a comprehensive network design tailored specifically to the requirements of the large convention, with a focus on providing high-density wireless coverage, capacity planning, and redundancy strategies to ensure uninterrupted connectivity.

  • Vendor Collaboration: Work closely with vendors to evaluate networking equipment, software solutions, and service providers, ensuring they meet the unique needs and scale of the convention. Manage vendor relationships throughout the design, implementation, and maintenance phases.

  • Wireless Network Deployment: Design and implement a scalable and resilient wireless network infrastructure capable of supporting thousands of simultaneous users. Coordinate with vendors and internal teams to install access points, antennas, and other necessary hardware to achieve optimal coverage and performance.

  • Security Implementation: Implement robust security measures, including encryption protocols, authentication mechanisms, and intrusion detection/prevention systems, to protect the wireless network from cyber threats and unauthorized access during the convention.

  • Performance Optimization: Monitor network performance metrics in real-time during the convention, identify areas of congestion or degradation, and implement optimizations to ensure optimal performance and user experience for attendees.

  • Capacity Planning: Forecast network capacity requirements based on expected attendance and usage patterns, and develop strategies for scaling the network infrastructure to accommodate fluctuations in demand throughout the duration of the convention.

  • Documentation and Training: Maintain detailed documentation of network configurations, topology diagrams, and troubleshooting procedures. Provide training and support to internal staff and vendors involved in network operations and maintenance.

  • Compliance and Standards: Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and best practices related to network security, data privacy, and wireless communications, maintaining a secure and reliable network environment for convention attendees.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.

  • Extensive experience (5+ years) in network architecture, design, and implementation, with a focus on large-scale wireless networks.

  • Professional certifications such as CCNP, CCIE, CWNP, or equivalent are highly desirable.

  • Proficiency in network planning and simulation tools (e.g., Cisco Packet Tracer, Wireshark, Ekahau Site Survey).

  • Strong project management skills with the ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage vendor relationships effectively.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and collaborate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
