JOB DESCRIPTION

The Mecklenburg County Democratic Party (“MCDP”) is seeking Organizers to help execute our organizing plans for the 2024 election and beyond. Mecklenburg is home to one of the highest concentrations of Democrats in North Carolina but has recently seen some of the lowest voter turnout rates in the state. MCDP is looking for Organizers to help us reverse that trend. This is a full-time, cycle-based role, with the potential for extension beyond 2024 based on performance and funding.

This position reports directly to the Organizing Director and works in close collaboration with other staff in executing their duties and supporting the day-to-day operations of the Party. Duties also include, but are not limited to:

  • Recruit and train volunteers to conduct direct voter contact.

  • Coordinate volunteer events that connect with voters in a meaningful way and grow our team of core volunteers and supporters.

  • Utilize a number of tactics and tools to hit daily and weekly metric goals including but not limited to phone recruitment, texting, high-traffic canvassing, canvassing and tabling.

  • Work closely with existing and new volunteer leaders to develop long-lasting organizing strength across the county.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Who are you?

The ideal candidate will have previous experience as a volunteer or staff on a political, issue, or advocacy campaign, experience using VoteBuilder and spreadsheet software, and strong communication skills.

**Qualifications -**In addition to the skills necessary to perform the above activities, the following skills are also required:

  • Previous campaign experience as staff or volunteer preferred but not required.

  • Local ties and experience organizing core communities is a plus.

  • Experience using VoteBuilder and MiniVAN is a plus.

  • Willingness to work across Mecklenburg County.

  • Willingness to work long hours and weekends when necessary, especially close to Election Day.

  • Flexible, adaptable and solutions-oriented.

  • Must have access to a cell phone, vehicle and ability to relocate if necessary.

Job Details

Applicants must live in or around Mecklenburg County or agree to move to the area upon hiring. Preference given to applicants who can work in office. Applicants must have the ability to travel to events and meetings in the Mecklenburg area and must have a valid driver's license.

This is an hourly position starting at $18.50 per hour over a 55 hour available workweek; 40 hours at the base rate and 15 hours at 1.5x the base rate. Organizers will only be paid for time worked but will always be provided the opportunity to work 55 hours.

This position also includes health insurance and paid time off. Interested candidates should send their resume and the contact information for two to three references to [email protected]. Please include your full name and “Organizer” in the subject line. Interviews will be conducted until the position is filled. If you are selected for an interview, you will be contacted directly.

About MCDP

MCDP (home to Charlotte) is at an historic inflection point. With more registered Democrats than any other county in North Carolina (322,000, plus 302,000 Independents), Mecklenburg County also has experienced one of the worst turnout rates in the state (93rd out of 100 counties). Tens of thousands of votes are being left on the table here in Mecklenburg County. It’s our job to boost turnout and propel statewide candidates to victory. Mecklenburg is the county that will decide the next statewide election.

When we succeed, the results will be big. In 2016, Roy Cooper (D) won the governorship by 10,300 votes. In 2020, Chief Justice Cheri Beasley lost her election by only 401 votes of the nearly 5.4 million ballots cast – two votes/precinct in Mecklenburg. Biden lost NC in 2020 by 75,000 votes.

You’ll work with a fresh and dynamic team, one that is open to big ideas, and new ways of thinking. MCDP is excited to empower its staff to innovate and to try new things.
