Paid Canvassers (multiple positions available) — NY State Assembly Campaign
Based in Southern Brooklyn (from Bay Ridge to Coney Island)
The Paid Canvassers’ key responsibility will be to persuasively represent the candidate to as many identified voters as possible, through door-knocking and phone-banking. During Early Voting and Election Day, some of this may shift to poll-site and street visibility. You will be part of a larger field operation that includes volunteers, but we will be counting on you to hit established metrics in both amount of territory covered and “positive IDs” made among voters. This includes reporting back to the campaign about conversations you have at doors. You will not just be telling voters about the candidate, you will be listening to their individual concerns on policy matters and neighborhood issues. You will likely be the first point of contact for voters and thus will be responsible for ensuring that the campaign is reaching constituents in a way that they make a plan during your conversations to vote.
Other responsibilities include:
Meeting and exceeding benchmarks for voter contact, volunteer recruitment, and GOTV efforts
Assisting with volunteer days of action with local community groups, clubs, labor unions, and other supportive organizations
Compensation:
Duration:
Preferred Qualifications / Experience:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including listening
At least one cycle of canvassing experience for a local candidate
Possess or have the ability to learn a basic-level understanding of electoral tools (Solidarity Tech, REACH, MiniVan)
Fluency in Arabic, Cantonese or Mandarin, Russian, or Spanish is ideal but not required
Expectations:
Until individual neighborhoods have established Field Leads and/or we determine you do not need to check in before or after shifts in other parts of the district (save for having literature), Paid Canvassers will meet at the campaign headquarters in Bay Ridge
Hours below account for brief communication / report back with the Campaign after shifts are over, for tallies and any needed information
This role requires a near-constant need to be on your feet, climbing stairs repeatedly
Ideal schedule would be:
Tuesday through Thursday (heaviest persuasion canvassing: consistent knocking in multiple parts of the district): 5pm - 9pm
Fridays (lightest, office-based: phonebanking, planning for weekend, etc.): 2p - 6pm
Saturdays: 11am - 4pm
Sundays: 11am - 4pm
Mondays off before June 15th (Early Voting, then the day before Election Day)
