Organizational Overview

The Democracy Defenders family of organizations (a c3, c4, legally separate PAC, and The Contrarian) is a leader in the fight against authoritarianism, working strategically in the courts and court of public opinion to restore American democracy by: upholding the rule of law, safeguarding free and fair elections, and fighting corruption.

 

Role Summary

The Policy Associate sits within Democracy Defenders Action’s (DDA) Policy, Oversight, and Ethics division, focused on coordinating with congressional offices to build support for legislation and oversight policies that safeguard our democratic institutions, expand access to the vote, and root out corruption.

Responsibilities

  • Subject to supervision, help draft, coordinate, and edit Congress-facing materials, including coalition letters, statements for the record, and investigative reports to advance policies that strengthen government ethics, voting rights, and the rule of law 

  • Assist with preparation for subject matter experts’ appearances at congressional hearings and advocacy events by drafting background memos, oral and written testimony, questions, and talking points 

  • Identify, develop, and strengthen partnerships to build winning pro-democracy coalitions and go on the offense against corrupt actors 

  • Communicate complex litigation and ethics investigations to policymakers, the media, and coalition partners in clear, concise, and accessible terms 

  • Track and report on federal policy developments to inform DDA’s legal and advocacy strategies 

 

Desired Qualifications and Skills

  • 2-4+ years of relevant experience on Capitol Hill, at a national nonprofit, and/or at a federal legislative affairs shop, preferably focused on judicial, anti-corruption, or voting policies

  • A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a field that emphasizes writing and research, or equivalent experience

  • Strong knowledge of the federal legislative process and the current congressional landscape  

  • Quality written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with policymakers and staff, the media, coalition allies, and the public 

  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and solve problems creatively

  • Exceptional attention to detail, time management, and organization 

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and build trusting relationships with a variety of different stakeholders, including discretion in handling sensitive information 

  • Unwavering commitment to defeating election sabotage and denial, fighting autocracy, and building a resilient democracy; Experience (professional, volunteer, or otherwise) advancing democracy, election integrity, and the rule of law

  • Commitment to diversity and inclusivity and an ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures, backgrounds, and beliefs

 

Role and Compensation Details

  • This role is based in the DMV, and requires frequent trips to Capitol Hill (DDA will not provide reimbursement for relocation expenses)

  • While occasional evening and weekend work is required, hours are relatively consistent each week and overtime work is compensated

  • The Policy Associate sits in our Policy, Ethics, and Oversight department and reports to the Chief Counsel and Director of the department, and works closely with the Chief Congressional Advisor 

  • This role primarily supports Democracy Defenders Action

  • The salary range for this position is $65,000 - $90,000, commensurate with experience
