JOB DESCRIPTION

5 Calls Civic Action seeks a Research and Writing Associate who will support the editorial team in policy research and communications. The Associate will play a critical role researching federal and state-level policy and legislation, drafting written summaries of their research, and supporting social media content development. This is an exciting position for detail-oriented individuals with an interest in legislation, research, writing, and policy communications.

5 Calls Civic Action is a 501(c)4 nonprofit organization that helps the public contact their elected representatives on national and state-level topics that are important to them. Since 2016, we have helped hundreds of thousands of constituents make nearly 13 million phone calls to Congress via our web and mobile platforms, and have helped millions more understand who represents them, what legislation their representatives support, and how Congress works.

 

Research and Writing Associate:

 

As a Research and Writing Associate, you will work alongside the team who researches policy and legislation on the federal and state level and produces content for publishing on the 5 Calls website, mobile apps, and social media platforms. The ideal candidate will have strong research and writing skills and will feel comfortable distilling complex information into understandable and approachable summaries. 

 

Responsibilities may include:

  • Research and track actions taken by the executive and legislative branches of government at both the federal and state level 

  • Write concise issue descriptions and call scripts breaking down critical topics and legislation

  • Assist in updating published content to reflect changes and current events

  • Communicate and organize content with partner organizations

  • Monitor news and social media platforms in order to respond to actionable items within relevant news cycles

  • Assist in social media content generation 

  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications:

  • Strong writing, grammatical, and proofreading skills 

  • Ability to work independently with an all remote team to complete tasks on a deadline

  • Comfortable researching complex information and translating it into accessible explainers

  • Capable of managing/prioritizing time and tasks associated with a fast-paced organization

  • Proficiency with Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Calendar),  Slack, and willingness to learn internal custom software

  • Willingness to learn the organization’s style and tone and apply this voice in our communication channels

  • Deep understanding of high quality and trustworthy news and media sources 

  • Proficiency with one or more social media platforms such as Instagram, Bluesky, and TikTok

  • Familiarity with Buffer, Canva, CapCut or other social media content generation tools highly desirable

  • Ability to write content without the use of AI assistance

 

Compensation: 

Part time compensation range for this role is $32,000-$35,000 for 20 hours per week of work (flexible hours, but generally during standard U.S. business hours).
