Position Overview

The ** Press Secretary** manages the Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party’s day-to-day earned media operation, serving as the Party’s primary contact for reporters. Reporting to the Senior Director of Communications, Research, and Data, this staff member ensures that the party’s public narrative is consistent, disciplined, and responsive to fast-changing local political dynamics, drawing on Research and Data insights. The Press Secretary also executes rapid response efforts, ensuring that immediate external communications reinforce the Party’s strategic message architecture.

This a fast-paced, high-impact opportunity for someone with sharp political instincts, exceptional writing skills, and the ability to thrive in a dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the DFL’s day-to-day press contact and spokesperson

  • Draft and distribute press releases, statements, talking points, and op-eds in alignment with the party’s broader message strategy and coordinate with all departments to maintain message discipline

  • Execute rapid response communications, drafting timely messaging in response to emerging events

  • Track media coverage of the DFL, opposition parties, and key issues, providing regular media reports to leadership

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with state, national, and local reporters

  • Prepare DFL leaders, candidates, and surrogates with media briefings and talking points

  • Coordinate press events, interviews, and media availability

  • Develop and maintain a long-term press calendar to highlight key DFL initiatives and proactively drive news coverage

  • Collaborate with Communications and Research teams to integrate data and visuals into press messaging

  • Contribute to speechwriting as needed

Who You Are

You are someone who thrives in fast-paced, mission-driven environments and brings a collaborative, solutions-oriented approach to your work. You believe in the DFL’s values and are excited to contribute your skills to making change in Minnesota.

We’re looking for someone who brings:

  • A commitment to the values of the DFL Party and electing Democrats at every level

  • Excellent writing, editing, and media relations skills

  • Experience pitching reporters and shaping coverage in political or advocacy settings

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines

  • Familiarity with Minnesota politics (strongly preferred)

Don’t meet every single requirement? We encourage you to apply anyway. Studies show that women, people of color, LGBTQ individuals, and members of other underrepresented communities often hesitate to apply unless they meet every qualification. At the DFL, we are committed to building a team that reflects the diversity of Minnesota — including people of all races, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, abilities, and backgrounds. We believe our party and our work are stronger when everyone is included and empowered.
