Department: Communications Reports To: Communications Director
A competitive Kansas Senate race needs a sharp, disciplined Press Secretary who can handle daily reporter contacts, turn materials around fast, and keep a high-volume press operation moving. You'll work directly with the Communications Director and serve as a day-to-day face and voice of the campaign with local, regional, and national press.
Media Relations. Serve as a day-to-day point of contact for reporters covering the campaign. Speak on the record, on background, and off the record as a designated campaign spokesperson at the direction of the Communications Director.
Proactive Pitching. Develop and execute proactive pitch strategies for local, regional, and national outlets to generate consistent, message-advancing earned media.
Writing. Draft press releases, media advisories, statements, op-eds, and messaging guidance.
Rapid Response. Support the Communications Director and Research Director on rapid response, incoming communications, and bracketing events as necessary.
Event Staffing. Staff the candidate at press conferences, editorial boards, and media availability. Handle press advance and on-site logistics.
Media Monitoring. Manage daily clips production; track opponent coverage and message penetration.
Digital Coordination. Coordinate with digital, social, and fundraising teams to extend earned media hits across channels.
At least one cycle of campaign communications experience, or equivalent experience in political, government, or advocacy communications.
Exceptional writing and editing under deadline, in the candidate's voice.
On-the-record spokesperson experience preferred.
Existing relationships with Kansas or regional political media are a significant plus but not required.
Kansas ties or familiarity with the state strongly preferred.
Ability to work a demanding campaign schedule, including long and irregular hours, evenings, and weekends.
Familiarity with Google Suite, LLMs.
Valid driver's license, reliable vehicle, and willingness to travel extensively across Kansas.
Success for our communications team is based on volume, quality, and strategic placement of earned media; responsiveness to press inquiries; ability to pitch and land stories; and contribution to a disciplined, proactive communications operation that advances the campaign's narrative and message.
