JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary: The Texas Democratic Party (TDP) is seeking a Press Secretary to work closely with the organization’s Communications Director, communications team, and other leaders to execute a long-term organizational communications vision and strategy. We are seeking a seasoned press secretary who is well-versed in pitching national, state, and local reporters, as well as bloggers and broadcast media; and in writing press releases, statements and op-eds. 

The Press Secretary will also be expected to contribute on several office-wide projects including large-scale fundraisers, press conferences, large events, elections, and other organizational events. Additionally, the Press Secretary will work closely with the digital team to keep all communications, messages, and branding clear and concise. This position is union-eligible. This position is a full-time, cycle position expected to run through November 2024 and is either hybrid in Austin, Texas or fully remote anywhere in Texas.

 

Core Responsibilities: 

  • Help oversee the organization’s daily press outreach, editing press releases, talking points, statements and op-eds as needed;

  • Help advance the Texas Democratic Party’s mission and goals via the organization’s communications strategy;

  • Daily tracking of state and national legislative efforts as it relates to the Democratic Party and issues facing working Texas families;

  • Identify rapid response opportunities daily and work with staff to implement response to them; 

  • Build relationships with top national, state, and local reporters, producers, correspondents and editors;

  • Organize press events including recruiting speakers, creating concepts, and hosting events; 

  • Work with legislative leadership to take advantage of press opportunities;

  • Maintain and update media lists.

 

Required skills: 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as great people skills; 

  • Strong time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously under strict deadlines;  

  • Responsive and positive team player who enjoys versatility and constant new challenges; 

  • Proficient in Google Docs, media-monitoring software, social media platforms and other social media tools. 

 

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years working in political and/or advocacy communications;

  • Previous experience of at least one full campaign or advocacy campaign cycle working in the communications field;

  • Strong knowledge of Texas political landscape and strong commitment to Democratic values;

  • On-the-record experience;

  • Experience with social media and digital branding;

  • Excellent writing and editing skills;

  • Sharp communications instincts and demonstrated ability to deliver in a fast-paced environment;
