Position
Sunrise Movement is hiring for full and part-time Schools Organizers to support high school and college students across the country to base build and take direct action for a Green New Deal, escalating towards mass student strikes and society-wide disruption in 2028. The Schools Organizer will work in a tight-knit team to develop national student organizing strategy, run in-person and virtual trainings, and create resources and coaching structures to support student leaders across race, class, and geography. They will also work closely with our distributed team, membership team, and mobilizations team in making sure our programming is cohesive across the organization.
Core Responsibilities (to be divided among team, this role may not hold all of these responsibilities)
Student Base Building
Help seed student hubs, especially on majority Black, Latine, and working class campuses.
Support existing school hubs to build membership across race and class.
Strategy + Campaign Design
Help to design programs and strategy to achieve mass student strikes in 2026 and 2027, acting towards society-wide disruption in 2028.
Work closely with the campaigns team, membership team, and delegate body (volunteer leadership) to adapt national programming and campaigns for a student context.
Run high school and college working groups to troubleshoot core challenges in campus organizing.
Hold some key partnerships with other student and teacher organizations.
Distributed Program Support
Create trainings, resources, and guides for distributed student organizing.
Directly coach top-performing college and high school hubs to escalate.
Supports volunteer coaches to work with new and existing school hubs.
Provide light structure, support, and coaching to stipended student organizers (fellows/interns).
Centralized Events
Writes curriculum for, plans logistics for, and trains at student summer bootcamp in July 2025 and other in-person trainings.
Helps with rapid response work and logistics for national mobilizations and big events (trainings, summits, etc) as needed.
Requirements:
Strong orientation to building a multiracial, cross-class movement, and especially committed to developing Black, brown, and working class leaders; must be aware of their own identities and understand how oppressive identities show up and impact work.
At least 6 months experience organizing students (middle/high schoolers or college) in a school institution, with Sunrise or a similar organization.
Strong communication and writing skills.
Ability to adapt quickly to changes and work in flexible structures as conditions change.
Commitment to the vision of the Green New Deal, and excitement about the experiment of organizing mass student strikes
Strong training skills, including curriculum development and front-of-room facilitation.
Understanding of campaign arcs, including the role of direct action.
Ability to travel nationally approximately 6 times per year, including for a 1.5 week summer bootcamp in July 2025.
Nice to have, but not necessary:
Experience organizing in majority Black and/or Latine high school or college settings, especially community or technical colleges.
Experience organizing with or adjacent to teacher’s unions.
Knowledge/ experience with school board operation and policy.
Experience planning and leading nonviolent direct actions, especially in a school context.
Experience with and ability to use digital/distributed organizing tools and platforms (Every Action, Mobilize, AirTable, New/Mode, text and phone bank tools, etc)
