JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Responsibilities 

The Senior Associate or Director, who should be based in the DC metropolitan area or within commuting distance to DC for periodic Hill visits and events, will report directly to the Senior Director and Vice President of Government Relations, and will assist with the government relations team’s work including the work of the Principal and Managing Principal. 

The role will be responsible for the following: 

  1. Managing appropriations requests, including drafting, collecting, and submitting forms; building congressional support; and monitoring congressional procedure. 

  2. Direct lobbying with Hill offices and federal agency staff for authorizing, appropriations, and regulatory goals and managing large scale outreach to Hill offices. 

  3. Researching policy and academic sources, analyzing and comparing legislative text, and making strategic recommendations for government relations team policy initiatives. 

  4. Tracking and analyzing hearings, markups, floor proceedings, and agency reports; gathering intel; and synthesizing concisely via internal and external-facing memos. 

  5. Drafting written materials to support policy objectives including letters of support, congressional letters, talking points, and hearing questions.  

  6. Supporting client events by prepping speakers, securing member remarks, and drafting talking points for events and briefings on and off-Hill.  

  7. Attending events to build relationships, grow in subject matter expertise, and support client advocacy and policy initiatives. 

 

Qualifications:  

Required 

  1. 2+ years in a full-time legislative role, including as a House Legislative Assistant, Senate Legislative Correspondent, or Government Affairs Associate or higher.  

  2. Experience interacting with Hill offices, including higher level roles such as members of Congress, committee staff, chiefs, deputies, and legislative directors.  

  3. Experience working in a client-facing or customer service type role managing multiple requests and competing priorities, including non-policy experience.  

  4. Intimate knowledge of House and Senate legislative process and procedure.  

  5. Demonstrated experience working in a bipartisan manner to advance policy initiatives on the federal level. 

  6. Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to synthesize large amounts of legislative information into concise documents, including research and comparative legislative analysis.  

  7. Strong oral and written communication skills, including strong interpersonal and relationship development abilities.  

  8. Proficiency with Word, Excel, and additional applications in Microsoft Suite. 

  9. Demonstrated experience working with multiple stakeholders to gather input, secure buy-in, and enhance support for a federal initiative **. ** 

 

Preferred 

  1. Has experience leading on a legislative initiative, for example having introduced, negotiated, and/or passed a provision through one chamber of Congress. 

  2. Experience working on, leading, and tracking appropriations and/or NDAA requests 

  3. Experience working with authorizing committees including but not limited to House Energy and Commerce, House Ways and Means, House Education and Workforce, Senate Finance, and/or Senate HELP 

  4. Lived experience and/or subject matter expertise in company focus areas such as: education, armed services and military families, mental health, maternal health, criminal justice, veterans, technology, disability, and racial disparities in health. 

  5. A strong interest in or passion for issues impacting women, families, young people, and infants.  

  6. Experience activating volunteers or working on political campaigns or issue campaigns.
