JOB DESCRIPTION

The Maine Democratic Party (MDP) is seeking an organized, strategic, and politically sharp Senior Communications Advisor to lead and manage our Communications Department and coordinate messaging with campaigns and partners.

This role is about shaping how Democrats show up in the conversation across Maine and ensuring our values are clearly and powerfully communicated.

As the party of Maine’s working people, we fight for opportunity, fairness, inclusiveness, and dignity for everyone who calls our state home. At a time of enormous political stakes, we are looking for a seasoned communicator who can operate with urgency, clarity, and confidence to build and manage a proactive, integrated communications program that puts Democrats on offense.

This position works in close partnership with two Communications Advisors who are focused on the U.S. Senate race and Governor’s race respectively, and directly supervises the Digital Director and, if capacity allows, other staff communications positions, overseeing social media, content creation, and online engagement as part of an integrated communications strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the senior strategist for the MDP communications department with direct reports.

  • Manage and supervise the Digital Director and any subsequently hired communications staff.

  • Set clear priorities and expectations for digital strategy in coordination with earned media, rapid response, and fundraising goals.

  • Advising leadership, candidates, and partners on messaging, media positioning, and public communications.

  • Serving as the central communications hub between the Maine Democratic Party and the two MDP Communications Advisors overseeing the Governor’s and U.S. Senate races, ensuring message discipline, strategic alignment, and unified narrative execution across Party and campaign communications.

  • Ensure message consistency across the organization, including with campaigns, county committees, elected officials, and partner organizations.

  • Work with the Executive Director and senior leadership to define communications priorities and political positioning.

  • Coordinate with the DNC, allied organizations, and Democratic campaigns on shared press and messaging strategies.

  • Coordinate closely with the Digital Director to ensure rapid response messaging is mirrored and amplified online.

  • In coordination with the fundraising team, provide guidance on fundraising communications and donor-facing messaging.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications

  • Three or more years of professional experience in political communications, journalism, campaigns, public relations, or a related field.

  • Proven ability to think creatively and work collaboratively in a fast-paced team environment.

  • Strong understanding of earned media strategy and political press operations.

  • Ability to work irregular hours during peak campaign season.

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to write quickly, clearly, and persuasively.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

  • Strong political instincts and the ability to translate complex issues into clear, compelling messages.

  • Familiarity with Maine politics and/or the Maine press corps is strongly preferred.

  • Familiarity with Maine politics and/or the Maine press corps is a plus.

  • Experience supervising staff or managing teams is strongly preferred.

Salary is dependent on experience and is in the $80,000 range. This is a full-time position that offers a generous benefits package.
