**The Role**
Operative is seeking a Senior Full Stack Engineer to lead our development-focused engineering. This is a high-ownership role focused on building and strengthening a mission-critical product. You will work across the backend and frontend, help solidify our technical foundation, and play a meaningful part in shaping how engineering functions as we grow. Our team relies on AI coding tools to move quickly and focus on high-impact work. An openness to using them is critical for this role.
This position is fully remote.
**Key Responsibilities**
* Build and maintain backend services in Java and Spring Boot that support critical compliance, reconciliation, and reporting workflows.
* Own major parts of the platform architecture, including service boundaries, reliability, and code quality.
* Work on our server-rendered UI layer, which uses HTML templates, HTMX for interactive elements, and supporting JavaScript and SCSS assets.
* Contribute to data modeling, API design, and integrations between core microservices.
* Improve and maintain CI/CD, automated testing, observability, and overall engineering hygiene.
* Collaborate closely with product and compliance teams to translate real-world filing rules and data flows into stable, correct software.
* Help establish team norms around code review, documentation, and development best practices.
**Qualifications**
*Required:*
* 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
* Strong production experience with Java and Spring Boot in a microservices environment.
* Experience working on server-rendered or hybrid web applications (e.g., MVC frameworks, HTML templating engines, HTMX, etc.).
* Solid frontend fundamentals with JavaScript and CSS/SCSS.
* Experience with AWS and containerized environments (EKS/Kubernetes preferred).
* Familiarity and comfort with AI-powered coding agents, such as (but not limited to) Claude.
* Demonstrated ability to take ownership of architecture, reduce technical risk, and improve code quality.
* Comfort operating with autonomy in a small, fast-moving startup environment.
*Nice-to-Have:*
* Familiarity with AWS Cognito, JWT authentication patterns, or security-sensitive flows.
* Experience with PostgreSQL, Terraform, Helm, and GitHub Actions.
* Prior experience as an early or founding engineer.
* Experience in the political or advocacy technology space.
*Compensation*
Competitive compensation package with total value of $140,000, consisting of base salary and equity compensation. Operative is prepared to offer an equity package commensurate with experience and the seniority of this role, along with a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, vision, and dental insurance and a FSA.
