Get Free is a modern day civil rights organization building a youth-led movement to repair past harms, remove ongoing barriers to equality, and realize a future where freedom is for all. Since we launched in late 2023, we’ve won a historic reparations commission in New York, got the DNC to adopt key parts of Our Repair Mandate into the 2024 party platform, and pressured universities to protect Black studies programs in the face of the MAGA regime’s plot to whitewash academia. Now, we are quickly building out the team and infrastructure of people for our campaigning and organizing through 2028.
About the position
As the social media manager at Get Free, your role will be crucial in executing and growing an innovative and cutting-edge social media program to reach hundreds of thousands of young people across the country to take action to make reparations and reparative policies a political and public priority. You will be responsible for growing and maintaining Get Free's presence on Instagram, TikTok, Bluesky, Threads, and Linkedin, testing and distributing messaging, supporting our Discord community of supporters, and experimenting with content strategies to increase our digital footprint and impact. The Social Media Manager will also be responsible for increasing the organization's online video output and should feel comfortable being in front of the camera and coaching others to record front-facing videos of their own.
This position will report to the Communications Director and work closely with our Digital Director and growing staff team and movement leaders, with a particular focus on empowering & supporting our volunteers to develop video content.
We’re looking for someone who is excited about experimentation, aligned with our values, strategy, and vision, and who wants to apply their deep knowledge of organizational social media strategy to ensure our movement’s reach and impact at a national scale. This role is for someone who is committed to our mission, believes in building political, narrative, and people-power, and has a steadfast desire to win.
Responsibilities
Ensuring all our social media strategies and tactics are focused on growing our choir of followers, converting and absorbing them into active supporters, and consistently posting engaging content to our channels.
Diving deep into understanding our repair mandate, theory of change, our tone, brand, and voice, and core messages and beliefs as a movement.
Contextualizing modern-day inequalities in the context of our nation’s unredressed original sins of slavery, native genocide, and exploitation.
Independently identifying relevant news stories that connect to Get Free’s mission to turn into content for our social channels
Managing our social media channels and supporting our volunteer Discord platform for creating, disseminating, and amplifying content and calls to action.
Drafting and posting rapid response content (such as video, graphic carousels, memes, attention-grabbing tweets), monitoring engagement and growth metrics, and growing a base of online influencers.
Support our online-to-offline pipeline for new and existing leaders to join Get Free.
Essential Qualifications
2+ years relevant experience managing movement social media accounts.
Proficiency in Canva and CapCut (or a similar video editing program)
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex political and historical concepts into digestible social media posts
Experience scripting, recording, and editing short form videos for platforms like TikTok and Instagram
Proven design skills and an ability to confidently and coherently translate Get Free’s visual brand to multiple public-facing assets
Able to strategically change directions or creatively iterate on successful tactics.
Desire to stay up to date with best practices in social media, trends and digital organizing to maintain a culture of experimentation and innovation.
Self-motivated, highly organized, and collaborative – ability to drive projects forward independently with a creative approach and attention to detail and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Location
The position is remote with opportunities for domestic travel.
Compensation and Benefits
This is a full-time position. Compensation will range between $80,000 - $95,000 based on previous experience and skill set matching the job requirements and qualifications above, with generous and competitive benefits including fully covered health insurance.
