JOB DESCRIPTION

Justice Speaks is looking for an experienced  **Strategic Communications Director **who will lead management of several high-profile clients, execute creative and impactful communications campaigns, and help build Justice Speaks into a leading progressive communications firm.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead client work with ownership, proactivity, and creativity:

  • Develop and implement strategy and campaign planning for multiple high-profile client accounts.

  • Drive high-touch, daily client communications including brainstorming, flagging concerns and problem-solving.

  • Manage client expectations and continuously improve client service in collaboration with Principals.

  • Expand existing accounts into new areas of work including but not limited to digital organizing, social media, paid media, ghostwriting and speechwriting, and narrative, branding, and positioning.

Execute high-quality strategic communications campaigns:

  • Demonstrate skills in all aspects of Justice Speaks’ work, including strategic communications, planning, message development, training, earned media strategies, internet outreach, and positioning.

  • Write and edit persuasive external and internal documents such as press releases, op-eds, fact sheets, talking points, editorial board memos and communications strategies.

  • Conceptualize and drive new story angles and other media opportunities for clients.

  • Place numerous stories through persistence and creativity, identifying new targets and trying new approaches until the story lands.

Grow Justice Speaks’ business:

  • Contribute to business development and growth efforts by identifying new business opportunities, participating in new business pitches and assisting in drafting new business proposals.

  • Help develop policies and processes that make Justice Speaks an effective and equitable workplace and communications firm.

 

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • At least 6 years of experience working in strategic communications with a PR agency, media outlet or in-house communications team, with experience leading client relations.

  • Strong storytelling skills with the ability to provide examples of pitches and other materials that clearly demonstrate these capabilities.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft clear and compelling messages tailored to different audiences.

  • Ability to proactively move into problem-solving mode when challenges and concerns arise, developing creative solutions that meet the objectives of both the client and the firm.

  • Demonstrated relationships with reporters and editors, sophisticated understanding of news cycles in relevant beats, and a strong news sense.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a strong attention to detail.

  • Proactive and collaborative attitude, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

  • Demonstrated commitment to Justice Speaks’ stated values, as well as equity based on race, gender and class; ability to connect with people from historically marginalized identities.

 

LOCATION, BENEFITS, AND SALARY

  • Position is hybrid, with work based in New York City and requiring 2 days in office each week

  • Annual gross salary in the range of $90-115k, dependent on experience

  • 21 days of annual paid time off

  • 14 sick days per year
