“Life shrinks or Expands in Proportion to one’s Courage” Anais Nin
UI/UX Designer for NextGen Organizing/Mobilizing Movement Platform to End the Fascism and Stop the Ecocide
Paid/ Part-Time • Remote OK (US) • To Start Immediately. Women POC from economic/social justice movements are especially encouraged to apply.
We especially welcome applicants from underrepresented communities in tech, and who would most understand our top demographic, African American working class women (eg Baristas, fast food workers, etc)
Whom We're Looking For
We're seeking a medium to senior level UI/UX designer who is passionate about social- economic and political justice impact and wants their work to matter. Years of experience are a big plus, but as important are good design instincts that will resonate with our audi- ence, and a drive to help build tools that support grassroots organizing across America.
This is a part-time paid cofounder role (though we’d also love an intern) with a path to long term well paid employment if the project gains traction. If it does, it will strongly appeal to wealthy progressive donors, hence far higher pay. You'll work flexibly from anywhere in the US,CA, or UK, on a team that is small, mission-driven, and moving fast. We hope you’ll realize this work could become the proudest achievement of your life.
About Our Organization and The Mission
We are a scrappy nonprofit startup with a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor, working to build a next-generation digital platform for civic organizing, mobilizing, and mutual aid. Our founder has launched four mission-driven startups — including one that won national awards, and he has raised nearly $2M for investigative documentaries and two tech startup ventures. Press clips from NYT, WAPO, LA Times, etc available re the founder’s early works.
Our platform will consist of three interconnected apps, the three most important being:
AdoptAnOrganizer (AAO): A progressive web app that will have several powerful advantages over GoFundMe, to help aspiring organizers quickly meet their basic needs — housing, transportation, food, etc — so they can quit unfulfilling jobs and dedicate themselves full-time to their favorite causes. If successful, this will be key to building an army of 1000 organizers critical to such urgent needs as protecting the November elections
MAMA (Mutual Aid for Mass Actions): A progressive web app that covers rent, mortgage, and health insurance for long-term strikers, enabling sustained nonviolent civic action able to shut down major pillars of power that support fascist regimes. This will be critical for Plan B: If the Nov. elections are stolen, our only option will be a Nat’l Nonviolent Strike & UprisingMAMA (Mutual Aid for Mass Actions): A progressive web app that covers rent, mortgage, and health insurance for long-term strikers, enabling sustained nonviolent civic action able to shut down major pillars of power that support fascist regimes. WinWisely Innovative Ladder of Engagement (LOE): Already developed and proven simple innovative LOE able to increase resster recruitment figures exponentially for nonviolent resistance strategy based campaigns. (See demo at tinyUrl.com/GetCourageNowLOE
Role: All the usual responsibilities of a top UI/UX designer for a progressive web-app based platform given our unique mission and audience, and how different this is from a typical eCommerce or commercial service selling something.
Keep in mind that 1) you would be considered a cofounder with director title; and 2) we won't be able to get serious funding until we achieve proof of concept, though we should be able to add at least an additional $2000 to the Designer Salary soon after having an impressive Mockup
Requirements
Minimum 6 years fulltime UI/UX experience plus lots of app building experience
Major plus: evidence in your prior work of commitment to social and/or climate justice values
Plus: If you like being Project Manager (Additional Pay of course)
Tech Stack and UX skills
Besides figma mastery and other usual tech skills, you should have UX/UI skills peculiar to a moral mission driven rather than profit driven app: Your key audience is people suffering and angry or outraged at the fascist take over, and the accelerated destruction of our mother, Earth. For example, you will need to create a place and user journey that feels more like an opportunity for sanctuary, for learning organizing skills and from fellow aspiring organizers and mentors, for community, and fir a bridge to freedom, rather than your typical cold financial transaction app.
Familiarity with any of the following is a plus; we don't expect expertise in all:
Figma mastery, Vercel, and othr prototyping/design tools. Also Linear to help Proj Mgmt
Progressive Web App (PWA) design patterns
Lovable.ai or other AI-assisted UI tools; though we are skeptical of its scalability and other drawbacks
Basic familiarity with React or front-end component libraries
Big Plus: You enjoy doing frontend html &css coding
Lovable.ai or other AI-assisted UI tools; though we are skeptical of its scalability and other drawback

Duration
Total engagement: 3–4 months minimum
Month 1: Approximately 10 hours/week
Months 2–4: Approximately 5-10 hours/week ( maybe fewer if using AI-assisted workflow)
Our MVP does not need to be highly scalable: we're targeting a few thousand initial users for AAO.
Compensation
This is a paid contract position with performance-based compensation:
Initial: $4,500 – $6,000, depending on scope of your design role (whether option A or B )
$2,000 – $3,000 bonus upon reaching 100 active users on the app
Additional medium five figure bonuses once we achieve MVP and can start getting funding
Strong potential for long-term part-time paid employment if the platform gains traction.
