JOB DESCRIPTION

OVERVIEW

From August 19-22, 2024, Democrats from all over the country will gather together in the City of Chicago to participate in the Democratic National Convention, where we will nominate President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for re-election. The Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) is assembling a diverse team with skills in community engagement, event logistics, finance, operations, IT, and more. The DNCC team will oversee and deliver on all aspects of the planning and execution of this Convention, from housing the delegates to convening Platform Committee meetings to producing the Convention’s live programming, which will be seen by hundreds of millions of people around the world.

 

SUMMARY 

The Volunteer Manager  is responsible for assisting the Director of Volunteers with distribution, training, and management of up to 12,000 volunteers. Volunteer Management is a team housed within the People & Operations Department. This position works closely with the Director of Volunteers to assist the Logistics Team (Security, Transportation, & Credentials), Accessibility Advisor, Venue Operations, Housing, Communications, Political & Coalition Outreach in identifying and supporting their volunteer needs for the 2024 Democratic National Convention.

 

REPORTING STRUCTURE 

  • The Volunteer Manager reports to the Director of Volunteers.

  • The Volunteer Manager will assist with overseeing interns.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Work with the Director of Volunteers, DNCC staff, & the Host Committee to collaborate with outside groups & organizations as directed to provide volunteer support for events leading up to & during the Democratic National Convention;

  • Manage specific areas of the Volunteer Program, as assigned by the Director, which could include but is not limited to the airport, hotels, convention center, volunteer headquarters, etc.;

  • Communicate daily with individuals & groups of volunteers to relay registration information, scheduling details, & answer any questions/complaints they may present;

  • Work with the Director of Volunteers to produce, order, & distribute volunteer uniforms & volunteer materials, including volunteer plans, handbooks, training materials, & manuals;

  • Manage & monitor volunteer data & pull reports as directed by the Director;

  • Assist with assessing meal needs & creating a respective distribution plan;

  • Other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • At least three years of management experience with electoral, advocacy, or volunteer organizing.

  • Experience writing & leading volunteer training sessions is a strong plus.

  • Possess exceedingly good interpersonal skills, including being comfortable making high volumes of telephone calls; speaking publicly & making presentations; leading meetings; etc.

  • Be able to provide excellent customer service to DNCC teams & foster a sense of team within our organization as well as with the Host Committee & our volunteers.

  • Employ superior organizing strategies to manage & schedule volunteers, team build, recruit & manage volunteer leaders, & create & implement effective & efficient communications strategies & plans.

  • Able to work independently in a fast-paced environment under the pressure of extremely tight deadlines.

  • Have a strong attention to detail & be able to multitask without sacrificing quality.

  • Able to problem-solve & think quickly on your feet.

  • Have an advanced knowledge of Google Docs and/or Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, as well as Slack and Signal.

  • Previous event volunteer management experience preferred. Scheduling & Advance experience also appreciated.

TRAVEL

There is no travel expected for this position.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

The DNCC will mainly operate out of the Headquarters Office, but will also maintain a number of satellite offices and additional venues. All of these spaces are professional office environments, and will require the operation of office equipment such as computers, phones, and copy machines. This position mainly uses an assigned workstation but may require movement or maintaining a stationary position for short or long periods of time. Employees may be asked to do tasks requiring dexterity or lifting items weighing up to 25 lbs. All employees may request reasonable accommodation to perform their job tasks.

JOB LOCATION: Chicago, IL

FLSA ELIGIBILITY: This is an exempt position under the FLSA.

SALARY & BENEFITS: The anticipated starting salary for this position is $65,000. The DNCC offers a benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance.
